AC only works on one side? No dual climate control

As the title states, Ive been having a weird issue where the AC only blows cold on the passenger side and just blows the ambient air temp on the driver side. If I close the vents on the passenger side, the driver does blow a little cooler, but still isnt enough to cool off the car on a day where its 80º and up.

Any idea why this could be? I do not have the dual climate control option so I would think it would be the same temp air coming out of both sides.

I've never had that problem, but I remember another thread about that same topic a few months back. I think that everyone said the cause was low refrigerant.

Do a search for that thread. It should be helpful.

Probably going to be one of 2 things.

-Leak or leaks in the hard lines.

or worse off:

-Massive leak or leaks in the evaporator, which is behind the dash.


I unfortunately had the 2nd of the those 2. Cost around $1100 to be done with Toyota parts.

+1 for low refrigerant charge. It's the strangest way for that problem to manifest itself, I don't understand it at all...but recharging seems to be the common cure for it.

If this problem occurred suddenly instead of a slow decline in performance, you might want to check the system for leaks as well. Otherwise your fix won't last long!

Thanks Ill look for that. Low refrigerant sounds right to me, just odd it only affects one side. When I had my motor replaced they had to recharge the AC and told me it only took 2/3 of the amount it was supposed to, but it worked for a year and a half after that and only recently started having issues.

Sounds like ill have to take it in somewhere to investigate. Hopefully its not an evaporator leak, Id much rather spend that money on some tight mods.

:thanks:Ok so that sounds better to me. It slowly got worse over time so hopefully no leaks. Ill take it in to get charged sometime soon. Cant stand driving in heat right now

You can do this very easily yourself. I had this happen last year and it is still holding up. Get a can of R134-A and fill hose from Amazon, cheap and easy, especially if you end up having to do it again. Watch a video on youtube to see how easy.

I would but I had it filled about a year and half ago and it only took 2/3 what it was supposed too and read full. Im pretty confident theres no leak, so I want to have it fully drained and refilled so I know its right. Have almost no idea how much is in there and dont want to overfill it either.

Anybody know what the low and high side pressures are supposed to be? I've got an AC manifold and hoses, and can refill the system myself. But I've never seen the pressures published.

low side is btw 35 and 45, hiside 220 to 250.......but this depends on the ambient tempreture of your location...google for the temp chart..the values i posted are for 24 deg c ambient
