Acceptable mileage for used 4Runner?

I am determined to purchase a used 4Runner no older than 2006, but prefer (at this point) a 2007. Obviously the market is VERY limited if I want to pay less than $20,000 (in California) for a 2007. I want to know how many miles, are "too many" for a used 2007 in particular from honest mechanics and/or toyota fanatics. I can do my KBB research in regards to pricing, but where I am getting stuck is at what mileage point should I just accept this isn't the one for me and I need to keep looking? I definitely won't (and can't) purchase one that has over 100,000 miles but my husband also thinks anything over 80,000 is something we should overlook, and I'm just not sure if that's right considering the stellar reputation these cars have. Anyone? Anyone?

Primarily an "around town" driver but we do love camping out in the wilderness and would probably travel a lot more if I had a more reliable vehicle...such as a 4Runner. I have put so much money into keeping my current car running (still no heat, defrost/etc.) that I'm OVER it and really want a reliable and long lasting car that won't have my nerves frayed constantly in the next few years... : )

coming from a Toyota "fanatic", I don't concern myself with the "How many miles is too many" question. I bought a 2004 about 6 months ago with 148k miles. It was a one owner and had all service records at a Toyota dealership. The truck now has 155k and drives like it has 55k. If the vehicle has been well maintained, that will make the difference. 80k miles is nothing! Just know that if you get the V8, the timing belt/water pump service is due at 90k and can run $1000 at a dealership. If you get a 4x4, make sure the 4wd engages in both 4hi (if it's a v6) and 4lo. Just make sure the vehicle runs and drives good and has been well maintained and you shouldn't have to worry too much about the mileage. Good luck.
 
from the sound of your post, you going to finace this vehicle. Since banks usually dont loan on anything older than 7 years and 100k.

I would expand your search to a larger area. I just had a friend go from philly to new hampshire (700 miles) to buy a motor home. the right motor home and did all the financing over the phone. for the right vehicle it would be worth the trip.

as for your original concern, miles. I bought mine at 164,000 and its the best truck i ever had. put a fair amount into maintaining her but i am sure it will serve me well for the next 5 years!
 
I have an 07 V6 2wd and I have owned it for 3 years. Mine currently has 95k miles on it and I have not had one bit of trouble. I just rotate the tires and change the oil with full synthetic every 5k miles. At 100k I plan on changing out all of the fluids and replacing the brake pads, but other than that she should be good for another 50k miles.

Like others have said, so long as the basic maintenance has been performed during the first 100k miles, you shouldn't have an issue. I recommend buying a certified pre - owned from your local Toyota dealership. In 2010, I bought mine with just 34k miles for $21,000.

I know the question may have been dopey but I had to ask...as one of you keenly noticed...I have gotten a loan and it's a big purchase (in my world...) so I just want to make sure I do the right thing. Absolutely appreciate ya'll taking a minute to respond to my question....can't wait to be a proud owner soon!

i bought mine with 60K miles (100 km). It was 4 yrs old back then, now I have 160 km or 100K miles and then engine and tranny is still very solid. These cars can easily hit 300-400K KM without any issues, provided its been maintained. If you look at the Consumer Reports reviews, all aspect of this car is above average.
 
I don't know about the V6 but I wouldn't worry about a high mileage V8. Those things are just starting to get broken in around 100K miles. There are guys w/ over 300K miles and it's still going strong.
 
I'll chime in here. I bought a used 06 6 cylinder Aug 2010 with 82K on it. I now have 165K on it and she is running like a champ. The only real maintenance I had to do other than oil changes etc, was I replaced the battery in it last week. When I pulled the old battery out, it was the OEM battery that had a 06 date on it. I do tow a 2 horse horse trailer with the horse in it every once in a while.

BTW, the trick that the rear wiper will do a one swipe on startup telling you the battery is about to bite the dust does work. My wife noticed it about 3 days prior to the ominous click click of a dead battery.
 
My 07 Sport 4WD had 101k on it when I bought it. Got it for 16,000. Put over 6,000 miles on it in less than 2 months and I love it. My mechanic, who is top notch, gave me the green light on it and said it's going to last a hell of a long time.
 
Just my 2cents which is probably worth less. Lol. I bought mine new on 12/5/03 and now have 83,951k miles with only oil changes, brakes, and tires. I am anal about my vehicles and my truck still seems new. Yes, there are some issues beyond my control like the damm crack I just noticed today on my dash, but any 4runner you buy that is within your specifications and well maintained should be a great and reliable vehicle. I believe the years you are looking at does not have inherent issues like mine which are the cracking dashboard and the head gasket issue. Good luck on your future purchase!
 
I bought my 2007 V6 2wd 3 years ago, at 40k miles, now it's almost at 80k. I've driven it from the east coast to the west coast twice and everything in-between and haven't had one hiccup! In fact it has been the most reliable vehicle I've ever owned, even with my last two vehicles being brand new driven right off the lot. I've just done the basic up-keep for it. Like everyone has said, just make sure it has been well maintained over the years, isn't due for anything major you aren't willing to pay for right away and having it certified is even better, if you can find that in a 2007. Good luck hunting, hope you find a keeper! :)
 
The biggest thing I'd be worried about is the maintenance record. My 05 4runner has over 240k miles. It runs great. If I sold it today the person buying it would get a great vehicle.

But the question is - How would they know that? They going to take my word for it? If I was buying an older vehicle I'd want to see complete maintenance record (i.e. oil changes....all PM maintenance...and any repairs). Too costly of a purchase to take a gamble.

Many banks and credit unions will in-fact provide a loan on vehicles older than 7 years and 100k.... however, you may be subject to a rate-bump. (i.e. if best rate is 2.25%, they may add on .50 for the extra miliege or years). That's how it works at my credit union.

And for me.... I purchased my 2007 T4R SR5 V6 at 104K. It was a little higher miliege than I wanted, but I knew the bullet proof reputation of this vehicle, plus the V6 has the timing-chain, not a timing belt (like the V8). Also, as everyone recommends, for my particular ride, the Carfax and maint. records were super clean. Also, when I popped the hood, it was the cleanest engine compartment I could find in the NW at the time.
