Just picked up this 71 Corona Deluxe sedan from the original owners, parked in 76 and rarely driven since. Yep, it's lime green.

That's Toyota #5 in our driveway.

Looks like it's become one with the earth... any more pics?

Oh and sorry but I have to move this to the All Other Vehicles section.

Cleaned it all up a while ago, here's a few more.

Going with either a 3rz or 22r depending on how much the ecu costs for the 3rz.

18ru is locked up, has a 4 speed, needs basically everything.

I don't think these doors are properly fitted (these are both closed.)

Cool project.

Don't count out the 2rz, just a bit less stroke but better for boost if you go that way. Ecu's are like 90 bucks at Spalding auto parts in Spokane.

The 3rzs sitting in the garage already, or I would be looking at a 2rz. I'm not too concerned with boost yet, and the max I would probably go would be like 8 pounds, even na this car would fly.

Thanks for the tip on the ecu, is that a factory Toyota one?

Yup factory ecu. They have been real easy to deal with and I'm across the boarder.

Picked up a motor, and some goodies.

22r that will be gone through, Weber intake manifold and a Weber Carb. Also got a 20r head I may use, along with stock intake and what I believe is 2 Weber adapters. I also got both stock carbs, 22 and 20r and a centerforce clutch for the 4r.

All for only 200$, total bill is 350 so far and I'm looking good, until I start rebuilding that is.

And I forgot to post my wheels on here. Enkei 92s, I'll have to run spacers, but I don't like the huge lip look.

It's a lot taller with air in the tires, I'll have to fix that.

Pulled the motor and trans out today, oddly, the motor appears to have been rebuilt and either barely or never ran. I'm still going with the 20/22r hybrid, but this should up the value of the old motor quite a bit. It has a new rear main seal, new freeze plugs, evidence of being hot-tanked, and a brand new clutch, not even dusty. I'll be using the clutch on the 22r, so that saved me a bit of money.

Toyota Corona in Lima, Peru............

UnderFire : Good luck with her! My aunt had a 1970 Corona. About 15 years ago, she gave it to my cousin to keep. He still drives it daily. Not very sure how many kilometers she has, but the motor has been rebuilt 2 I think. This Corona is the reason we were are a "Toyota" family. She just keeps on going!

Beautiful, I wish mine was in that good of shape, haha. That's a pretty cool story, I bet that car has a lot of history.

Lots of history. My aunt meticulously took care of it up until around late 90s. She only used Toyota OEM parts and the dealer. My cousin doesn't and takes it to a "corner garage" for when things go wrong. When I'm in Lima, I'll visit my cousin and we frequently take it (if I'm not renting a car). The constant 90-95% humidity in Lima isn't kind to it, but has held up very well.

1.7 Liter engine, 4 speed manual, dash-mounted "pull out" emergency brake, 4 drums all around. Original color is green (not that shade of green in the pictures).

My cousin is constantly asked by strangers if it is for sale. Peru being a poor country, people KNOW these cars last practically forever.

Finally have the 4Runner far enough along that I think it's about time to give the 'Rona some attention.

After a lot of thinking about what to do with the rear suspension, I'm pretty decided, it will be Solid axle still, and I'll either be using a parallel 4-Link or Trailing arm set-up, either one with coilovers and a panhard bar. Time to start really reading up on suspension geometry.

I heavily considered an independent rear, in fact I actually picked up an IRS out of a Datsun 240Z, and after a good look at it, it looks like it isn't possible without way too much work and test and tuning for me.

The front I'm still unsure about, I may end up having to have a set of A-Arms made to fix possible Camber issues, the coilovers should be simple enough, supposedly late 60's GM muscle cars used the same lower mount, so I may just need to chop a hole in the coil buckets and make a set of shock hoops for the upper mounts.

A rack and pinion swap may very well be possible, the current set-up is non-power steering but the linkage is set-up very similarly to a lot of R&P set-ups, so we'll see.

The plan for the engine is still the same, 22/20R Hybrid, very mild build, maybe a little cam or something, Weber 32/36 (maybe dual side-draft 40's in the future...) Celica W58 trans, the centerforce ended up not fitting the 4Runner, so it'll go in the car.

With a little luck, a lot of work, and some perseverance, I hope to be running and driving before this:

Dragging the Gut Festival

A friend of mine had a white '69 Corona in the mid 1980's. It was rare around here at the time. I remember it had a luxurious interior compared to the '73 Corolla Deluxe my dad bought new. It's nice to see these fixed up. Keep plugging away at it. It must take some creativity to adapt parts. I'd be lost.

Finally getting the ball rolling on the old 'rona, it's been sitting over a year, but I think I may have a pretty solid plan together now...

Here's what I've got so far...

First step is I'm planning on dropping the Corona body onto an early 90's Toyota 2WD P/U frame, this will give me a solid foundation to work with, and I have experience on framed vehicles, none on unibody cars.

I plan on finding a 5 Lug rearend that came with an 8" diff from the factory, then putting a Truetrac Limited Slip into my factory 3.73 hi-pinion out of the 3rd gen 4Runner, 4 linking the rear axle on coilovers, and I should be set in the rear...

For the front, it's getting a conversion to Coilovers, there are aftermarket A-arms already out there to do that or i may be able to come up with some myself, and possibly supra parts interchangeability, I'd also like to convert it to a rack and pinion if I can figure that out.

The whole frame I'd like to convert to bigger, better disc brakes, I'm sure fabbing that all up will be easy, I'd like to do Brembos, Wilwoods or something close to them on all 4 corners.

The front end of the car's body will be completely "Un-unibodied" in favor of a tube frame that holds the fenders, this is common practice among the 240SX crowd and should give me a lot more room and flexibility in the engine bay.

Once the car is set up on the frame right, I plan on doing a full cage, including the trunk, and adding a fuel cell in place of the factory gas tank, will run 4 racing (Sparco, corbeau, beard, recaro, whatever...) seats with 5 points set-up, but retain factory seatbelts for legal reasons.

Then I'll basically gut the car for a complete re-wire, make a simple custom dash panel, and I'll be ready to put the drivetrain together...

I would like to run a pre-VVTI 1UZ-FE out of an SC400 or LS400, basically stock in the beginning, maybe adding more power if it comes to it, I've decided to try to run it completely stand-alone off of an aftermarket ECU, I haven't chosen which one yet, AEM, Megasquirt or Haltech probably, couple it with the good-ol Toyota R series 5 speed trans and I'll have an all-toyota build that'll be pretty awesome and pretty cheap.

Got another major part(s) to add to the soon to be gigantic pile of Corona / race car-ish parts.

Got amazingly luck and scored big on a set of legit O.Z. racing F1's, 18x8 with about 6 1/8" backspacing, in theory they should fit very well under the corona with some fender well opening and small flares.

These wheels are crazy light, each one only weighs as much as a 15x8 steel wheel. Need to get them powdercoated gold though, hate the look of white wheels on basically everything.

Been slowly gathering stuff as I come across it, have picked up 3 gauges, decided on the Old-school AutoMeter Sport Comps, have found 3 so far, Fuel Level, Oil Pressure and Water Temp. All mechanical of course. Hoping to find some more at the big swap meet this weekend.

CoTVX4o.jpg

Also might've hit a setback before I even start. I measured up the pickup frame I was gonna use for the corona, and it might just be the right frame for the 2nd gen 4Runner frame swap I want to do, so i might be making my dropped 2nd gen DD before the Corona build starts.

The Corona is not forgotten, no updates, unmoved and untouched for the last 2 years, but I think I'm ready to actually work on this thing. Have been keeping an eye out for the S13 subframes I need, however I can get them, and also looking for a suitable donor for it's RZ powerplant. Nothing yet. But I've decided to start collecting other parts I know I'll need.

I am now confident enough with my knowledge of the RZ series that I shouldn't have any major setbacks getting it running, getting the whole thing rolling will be the challenge.

Fuel tank arrived today. nothing special just an eBay special 18 gallon cell.

The plans have shifted. I really just want this thing to be the sketchy piece of crap it already is, but be functional enough to rip around. No more big race car plans, just a cheap ratty pile of classic japanese car.
