Adding another gun to my small collection: P290

Something to consider - SIG no longer makes all of their parts in-house. They outsource a lot of stuff that they used to make themselves, which has led to a lot of issues with "newer" SIG firearms. This is what I was told by a SIG armorer instructor, and after inspecting some of the new weapons that our new folks are being issued when they leave the academy, I tend to agree.

I've been carrying a SIG for work for 17 years, but I won't buy another.

I heard the same...that quality has gone down. My old P239 was flawless. But then again, I heard that most manifacturers had gone down in quality. Some blame it on the current economy where manufacturers are not doing as many testfires as they used to either due to cutting cost or lack of gunsmiths at the facility.

I was also told that the SIG handgun division was sold by the parent company and purchased by two American businessmen, for whatever that's worth. All second-hand info, of course.

I DO know that my 229 and 232 - both manufactured over 10 years ago - still perform flawlessly.

As the armorer for my agency, I will only buy SIG "OEM" replacement parts. I can get away with that because SIG happens to still make the parts for the weapons we issue.

However, some others may not be so fortunate: the SIG rep told us that they plan to discontinue production of parts for the P220, for example, stating "after all, it's a 10-year-old gun..."

This kinda had me scratching my head, since Remington still makes parts for the deer rifle I inherited from my grandfather, which was built well over 40 years ago. Go figure.

All i know is that my P290RS is now a Sig that i expect. I must say that Sig supervisor was a pleasure to deal with. Very honest and actually worked FOR ME on my behalf, which is rare these days! My P239 (old reliable) is back in my gun safe with my Ruger SP101. So, yeah, Sig Sauer is back to being the brand that i want/expect them to be with this 2nd gen P290RS.

Unfortunately, i am a "inside-waistbend" conceal type of guy...so, i have no use for the belt holster.

I don't know...will try and keep an open mind...now, please keep in mind my requirements:

1. No Glock trigger. I want to avoid accidental discharges. So, i want DAO or DA/SA triggers.

2. No safety. Thus, no 1911 (SAO) triggers.

The gun has no safety and you carry it inside your waistband? Do you ever keep it in condition 1 (chambered) when concealed that way?

I didn't know they made guns without a safety. I'm pretty sure all the ones at stores around here (Kalifornia) have a safety.

The Sig Sauer P290RS is a DAO weapon. That means that the trigger is the safety and hence carrying one in the chamber becomes much safer. (Think of the way that a revolver works) The trigger pull will unlock the firing pin, as well as pull the hammer and release at the same time hence the "Dual Action Only" designation. The biggest downfall to a DAO is getting used to a long trigger pull compared to the SA/DA trigger of most semi-auto pistols.

My Sig P250 is the same way and I love it. Alot of "agency's" are going to a DAO system to eliminate officers A. forgetting to or having to take the extra time to release the safety, and B. because of safety's, some officers would carry with the safety off and "issues" would arise.

Do some google searching of DAO VS SA to get a better understanding.

I carry in the same location as Thai with the muzzle touching my **** at times. I carry with a JHP round chambered. While my walther isn't a sig, it is DAO as well and "designed" to be carried chambered. Few modern semi autos have secondary safteys.

Kalifornia has its own set of laws. Not surprising your government thinks they need to dictate this part of life and being as well. Google bullet button for more democratic protectionism.

Hope it's not for concealed carry. Those frames are huge. Post a review when you get it have some trigger time. I'm morbidly curious in how those handle but doubt I'll ever buy one.

Those are the weapons that some people up here carry for "wolf protection." They're enormous and almost require a shoulder rig and a big coat to go over it.

Ok, i am here to update...after 500 rounds of both Winchester cheapo Walmart brand AND Winchester PDX1 (124gr +P and 147 gr), my gun is flawless!! Not a single hiccup. Not one!

And from reading the forums, it looks like Sig found the issues with the 1st gen P290 and fixed all of them. Everyone who has the new 290RS has had perfect experience.

Highly recommend it...it is now my official conceal carry!:boink:

Damn, i hate it when i have to retract my statements...after many rounds, i just cannot get used to the new P290RS trigger. For whatever reasons, Sig worsened the trigger pull on the RS version...longer pull. It is already a DA only trigger (aka about 10 lbs to pull)...then making it a mile long to pull makes it very hard to aim! Sh!t! The original trigger on the 1st gen p290 was manageable.

Good news...it still performs flawlessly...no jams. Bad news...i can't shoot it accurately enough! :nono:

So, i am back to my old trusty...P239...a bit bigger but i am very accurate with it. The P290RS is now back in my gun safe as a home gun.

I hate the DAO's but love all other SIGs. I've got too many of 'em but cannot part with any of them. Same for the Springfield double stacks a little Kahr that gets the most carry.

No Glocks allowed in my house.

I am loving my Walther PK380. It's not a sub-compact by any means, but at 6'3" with a 6 foot wingspan and the hands to match, I can't really hang on to a sub-compact gun. After all, what's the point of a gun that you can't shoot. I had some issues with jamming when I first purchased it, but sent the gun off for service and now it is shooting great. I put about 100 rounds through it so far and not one issue since sending it in for service. I have yet to get my CCW here in VA, but when I do, it will be my daily carry gun.

Thai, any chance a smith could work on that trigger for you and make it better suited to your draw? I had a ruger 45 boat anchor model years ago that I hated until a smith did some work on it for me. Loved it after.

I guess that I could do that...good idea. Currently, Sig does not offer any special trigger mod in their custom shop. I may have to go independent.

Actually went with the Taurus Judge "Public Defender" Polymer.
Been waiting for them to go on sale and finally did, $349 after rebate.
Get it tomorrow after my 72 hr. wait and will get some firing time next week.
