after the toytec install... rattling..

Hey all,
I developed rattling coming from the rear of my recently lifted 3G. The sound sounds like a broken shock (i had one 2 years ago) ... I only hear the noise when i go over a speed bump or when there is a seperation in the road.. Basically whenever the suspension has to do it's job.. I was also thinking that maybe the springs might have something to do with it as well.

I crawled under and tried to move things around.. checking for loose parts. I have have not found any.. I am leaning toward the shocks or the springs. I was also thinking that because i dont have an awful lot of weight in the cargo area that might have something to do with it. I'm sure that the shocks are installed properly.. although the boots are slipping down.. I might have to zip tie them to stay put. I should also mention that before the lift was installed the shop called me and asked about the spacers(levelers to fix sag) that i had them install years ago.. I had the shop remove them.

since i am having the problem in the rear i'll mention the rear parts
OME 890 REAR COILS
Bilstein 5125's in the rear..

Mine did that today as well new
Lift 890 springs and OME shocks the shock was not all the way tight at the top I guess the bushing was able on free up a bit under load I know they was tight and uneven used lock tight on them as well. But that took care of it will see how it goes the next few days

Thanks for the reply... that was the issue eh? i'm glad it was not oo serious. I dont think it's going to be a big deal. I would like to get it sorted out sooner than later.. hopefully there will be some more replies.

Lay under your rear end and have someone jump on the bumper, I bet you'll find it.

I've had the loose shock bushing issue before just like Harleydoc mentioned.

Crisis located... it turns out that the way the toytec lift is engineered when in stalling the rear shocks the extra bracket they use a nut and a bolt to mount it to the upper part.. The nut broke loose so all they had to do was tighten it up again.... I should have taken a picture if anyone wants to see it... i will thanks for all of the suggestions..
 
The 5125's are an "eye to eye" shock. Our 4runners rear shocks are designed to mount with an "eye to stem" shock. Thats why toytec sells the shocks with the stem adapter. Glad you got the issue figured out.
 
I was pretty relieved when they told me what the issue was... I thought it might have had something to do with the shock... same sound when one of the originals rotted out.. clanging all over the place..

do you have the 5125 with adapters? because i went through the same thing when i installed mine...you really have to tighten down those nuts ontop of the adapters because if not it will move around and make a crackin sound like a broken shock!!! I hate the way that set up is i am going to weld mine on the side of my frame next month i hope....


guess i should have read the rest of the post hahaha....u already figured it out...but anyways theres my 2c...not worth much~!

Thanks for the reply they are always welcome. Yes i have those "U" shaped adapters i believe they came wi the the kit. the installer and i both were moving things around when he found it. Yes. it was that nut on top it's like a large ass nut with that nylon so it does not back out.. all he had to do was to tighten up on it and i was good to go.

It did sound like a broken shock. i had one of those during the winter.

I just installed the Toytec ultimate lift with the 5125's in the rear and mine came loose about 500 miles after the install and I think they are coming loose again. I'm leaving for CO from Chicago at 4AM and I'm trying to get this figured out. Other than tightening them as much as possible (which we did the last time) what else can we do to get them to stay put?

Also, when they are tightened down, should you be able to turn the upper portion of the shock? Because I can :violin:
 
It sounds like these nylon nuts aren't the best. This is the third post I've seen about the same issue I had a few months back.

The worst part is that after I tightened them up a few months ago, they're loose again. I'm headed to Toytec to have a chat and see if they can assist because I sure as hell needed a lot of help installing the damn things in the first place.
 
yeah that nut on the top of the bracket really does SUCK~!! i put a lil bit of locktite on mine, so far so good...

Sorry for the late reply.... I sorry that all of the rest of you guys are having the same issue that i had.... The tech that worked on my truck assured me that it wont happen again... I hope he's right... I dont know how much space there is or isnt in there... but is it possible to maybe place one tack weld on the nut? I mentioned this to a buddy of mine and he said that it might be a good idea.

To answer your question NO, I dont think that you should be able to move the shock body. I think it should be tight. when the the tech finnished dealing with my issue it was tight.

How tight are you guys torquing the nut? I have run these shocks for years and never had a problem with them loosening up. They have to torqued pretty tight.
 
I don't know about getting to TQ wrench up in the to TQ them but I Just had to tighten mine up again seams like every few weeks they loss.... :()
 
I had the lift installed and a week later the right rear was rattling. I had it Diagnosed and found it was loose. I had it tightened drove around for about 100 mi it was good.

I have not been in the truck since and wont be for another month. I hope that with weather or anything else it wont loosen up.

I wont be Happy.

I wonder if this has been brought up to the good people at Toytech. This supposed to be the BEST lift kit available.

I guess the "Lift part" is working.. Just a minor inconvience
