Aftermarket Alternators

Getting my engine rebuilt and figured I would upgrade the alternator at the same time. I've had my 4runner beep at me as I winched it though 200m stretch of snow and I assumed that's the low battery alarm. Did some searching (google and on here) and didn't find a whole lot. Anyone else upgrade to a higher output alternator? Best case would be one I can find in Canada and get here soon for the rebuild.

And yes, I'll be posting all about it once it's done...and if anyone remembers the last time I posted, yes my 4runner has been out of commission for 6 months, I don't want to talk about it... :bash: :tsk:

I've seen only a few aftermarket alternator swaps done and most folks had poor experiences. the stock alternator is a pretty good unit so I'd say go OEM or with a reputable stock replacement.

Got a referral to the following shop from someone on bobistheoilguy. Apparently this shop does a ton of business from the local shops and only focuses on alternators, starters and electrical components. I never got the chance to use them on my old vehicle. Let us know what you find.

Denso is who makes our alternators, so if you buy a Desno branded part it should be equivilant to factory.

In terms of "Upgrade" alternators, if you search in the forum you'll find a few threads that have some websites. DC Power is one company that sells some beefy alternators, but you're paying a bit for the quality.

Check out Mean Green high output alternators, they're expensive but if youre running a lot of power draw, well worth it:

They don't seem to have any specs or pictures listed for their product? I know some of DC Power Inc's higher end stuff is not just a suped up stock alternator; they machine new cases for the heavier duty internals (part of why they cost so damn much.)

Stinger is probably another good choice.

Mean green alternators are all brand newly manufacturered in their factory, not modified stock alternators, they put out 200-220 amps, and i've had a few friends that swear by them.

i have been using a guy for the last 12 years to build me custom alternators in OEM housings.

Typically OEm rebuilt modified alternators come in the $300 range

Nope, Singer, usually built on one of the GM large case platforms like the CS144, they are 100% custom built to what you need it to do, I ordered one and never put it on, but I plan to get another one and follow through. I'm running a rewound stock unit, but the tiny Denso case just can't compare.

Does any of the factory v8 alt fit our cars? I'm about to put in a 1000-1500 watt rms audio system in my 4runner and just need little more amps. I would go with a mean grean but if i can save some money by going factory denso. i would do that

FYI: talked to my alternator guy the other day.

High Output Alternator using all new internals will cost around $200 and will require a core plus shipping. He does not have any cores ATM.

OE is 120amps, new one will be 190amps in the stock housing using the stock belt. I have been using him for the last 12 years, or the same amount of time i have been in my business.
