Aftermarket differential lockers.

So I took off with the woman to the woods.

I got to say the 4runner aint a jeep. Lot's of scuffing on the fender flares from mingling with trees. Shucks I even had to fell a small black Locust down out the way with my 22oz estwing rip hammer. The 4runner is setup fine and goes where I need with minimal belly rubbing (Spare tire took some licks under the back, lol) with 1999 height and 265/75-16 Michelin LTX M/S2.

Rear differental lock is fair, but the front defiantly needs some help.

Who is running a selectable air or electric locker? Any leads on who to take a good look at.

If my front differential was being defiant, I'd give it a good spanking. Teach it some respect.

Lol, 5 gallon paint stick above the knee below the back with light stripes? Lol

Random pictures from yesterday at the beach.

Lol, window vent visors didn't have a chance between trees and 4Runner in off camber situations. But all in all the woman isn't mad, but it has been established that the 4runner isn't quite as capable as a good stock CJ/YJ. This was the first time I have had it out in the woods and on the rocks.

Biggest complaints (First Mods to address if addressible?): Open front differential, low slung component below frame rails, Long wheel base, and 4Lo in L is a little too fast.

If you can drive your open diff is fine. A good flexing suspension will keep tires planted. I never hit my underbelly with lift and 33's. Long wheel base helps keep you from ending up on the roof and me cargo space. Never heard 4lo being to fast.

Please sell you rig and hey a jeep. Jeeps stock are way more capable. 4runners where not meant to be stock offroad rigs like jeeps. It's a lifted soccer mom van.

I have a YJ. This is just for the 4Runner is just for the Ms to get the groceries and shuttle the kids.

Open front leads to hitting with momentum to bounce over. I'm more of a take it easy sort of guy.

Bigger diameter tires would only make my crawl faster and sit higher. trails here into the river and lake are too low slung making all this glass that much more prone to attack.

anyone ever lift their drivetrain up into the truck?

Brutis (my YJ) back 5yrs when big tires were cool to me. Back down to 32x9.50's as of current.

Probably should get some decent off-road tires on the 4runner first.

Is your 4runner automatic or 5speed?

In my 5speed I do wish the 4lo was a little bit lower. I have 4.10 gears so maybe someday I'll swap them out to get a lower gear ratio.

So much meat left on these I can't justify it yet but you'd be amazed what some Michlin tires can grab. Some of the best tires I ran on rocks and grip like a mother just leaving more to be desired in the dirt.

I was gawking at some LT235/85-r16 Michelin AT2 when I picked up my original design BFG KO tires last season.

The 4runner is the automatic, but not sure what gears I have.

Locker in the front is sounding like more of a priority to me than getting on fabbing a pair of bumpers.

Yes.

You'll need a custom crossmember, a 1.5" BL, and a 1.5" Engine Lift.

And something that isn't offered anymore.

Unless you go with an Inchworm Lefty, which then you'd be fine.

BUT, you're not going to get a flat belly without getting the Lefty or the thing that isn't offered anymore.

(I keep saying the thing that isn't offered anymore, because I'm about to start working with the person that made them and figure out a solution to the issue we had.)

As far as bumpers, sliders, and skids go, I have enough wire and tallent to do what I imagine. Just need more metal, lol.

I built an air bladder bumper for the rear of my YJ (Which BTW a Chevy Sonic found it's a force to be reckoned with). I'm still on the hunt for an A/c compressor to pressurize it for air tools out n about.

I think I'd like to follow suit with the 4runner. But I am really digging the original fender flares and sideboards because they look cool and contemporary, and keep the tire spray and debris off the side (Plus they're tough as hell seeing how many rocks I drug them over).

Seems as if I could build some stilts for the engine, a new crossmember, cut and refab the driveshaft hoop to the xfercase rear, I'd have a decent tuck. I haven't really checked my gas tank yet. Shucks from there it just looks like a lot of 1/4 or 3/16 plate with holes drilled.

I see body lift on your list. I guess this is to give room to lift the powertran?

How about firewall and transmission tunnel Modification? There is a lot of interior plastic and carpet, I could probably cover any new fab work inside.

This was supposed to be just a driver, but I'm a 4x4 guy and this is kinda cool, but I'm still a CJ, wrangler guy.

Always a trade off wanting to drive AND wheel. One thing is the inchworm set up allows you to have a 4 to 1 low range, which in my opinion is by FAR the most productive thing to do, even over a front locker. Tires will give you belly clearance the easiest. I personally HATE body lifts, so tucking the engine and trans to gain 1.5 inches just seems overly complicated to me.

So decent 33" tires with 4.56 or 4.88 axle ratios, 4 to 1 low range and it will go anywhere that YJ will go. The wheel base isn't actually all that bad, it helps you in some instances and mildly hurts in others. Most rock crawlers stretch the CJ7 to 108", I think we are at 112".

Any vehicle can be made in to a good off road rig. My group has 5 jeeps, 1 Nissan, 2 Toyotas. It's always been the driving style that creates trouble, but no one has been 100% trouble free.

Word to that. When my grandparents bought me my YJ back in 2004 it was my 3rd vehicle (1st/2nd tie between 90 Acura Integra / 79 Grand Wagoneer I drove whichever wasn't between resurrection to school and work). When I got my YJ it was cherry with 60k miles. Super nice till It got a SOA lift and 37's. From there I drove it and down graded to 36's, then 35's, some TSL 34x10.50's and now 235/85-16 (32x9.25's) still on SOA I might add. Big tires were cool till I went through a divorce, a criminal court battle and otherwise midlife crisis and it became my sole source of transportation. I have outgrown balloon tires but I still haven't outgrown these mountians. Maybe some 235/85-16 tires eventually and really the drivetrain tuck is me getting deeper than I want to (till I guess I inherit after she drives a couple years (and jeep qualifies for antique auto tag), but a front sway disconnects, 4:1 crawl and locker are easy bolt-ins that I think would make getting to my swimming and fishing spots that much less of a hassle.

Don't let my hating fool you, I do like the stability (and payload space) of the limosouine 4runner wheelbase up and down hill, it just makes for a ***** on trails that really are meant for sidexside's that my YJ eats for a snack.

I see the ARB air locker, does anyone make an E-locker or even clutch pack LSD?

I think I'd like to keep a lunchbox out of the front unless I had manual hubs (bad prior experience).

I'm running a lunchbox (Aussie Locker) up front. Nice drive-ability and rarely hear it click. Easy to install.

Just throwing in my 2 cents. I think skids, lift, and good rubber should be a priority over a locked front.

Yea? The one I had it my jeep made the most awful racket till I went with air-lockers.

The biggest reason I ditched it was because it nearly caused a collision due to it's inherent characteristics and nature of the design.

Lunch boxes are great, but not for me. I am clutch pack LSD, air or e-locked all the way for life... Unless it's just an open carrier, lol.

Did you have it in the rear end? Mine is up front, so unless I'm in 4wd there are no drive-ability issues. Definitely no racket. I can just barely hear it clicking when I turn if I have my window down. When I'm in 4wd, it steers a little more difficult but that's about it. But my rig only gets into 4wd when I'm off road.

I believe the only selectable locker up front for our 4runners is the Arb(RD90). I actually just purchased one, just trying to figure out what gear ratio I want, 4.56 or 4.88.
