Airaid Jr Intake Kit

Anyone familiar with these or aftermarket intake kits in general?

Seems like somewhere I heard someone having problems with changing out intakes for better airflow and it causing codes to go off for some reason.
Although it seems like that may have been when also using a supercharger.

I would like to do it unless there is some problem that I might be asking for if I do.

I am thinking of changing out the intake tube and air filter with this:

AIRAID® - Jr. Kit - 2002 Toyota 4Runner Air Intake

I am going to be going on about a 7000-8000 mile cross country trip probably in mid to late May so I am going through front to back top to bottom and get her in as good a shape as possible.

Any other suggestions also welcome.

My mother is dying right now, have been by her bedside for weeks so my brain is scattered and simply not really thinking very clearly.

Very sorry to hear about your Mother, you have my condolences.

As far as the intake mods, personally, if I was going to be far from home, I would hold off on such mods just for the sake of reliability. There's always the ol' DPM/ISR - which is quickly reversible if it's giving issues. MUCH cheaper than the Airaid too...
(and don't forget about the tail end either - all the intake air in the world doesn't do much
without getting it back out somehow.)
 
I'm running the tube part of the kit with oem filters. I got mine on Craigslist. If anything it cleans up the engine bay.
I did it with the deck plate mod and it does get noisy at high rpms but it doesn't bother me.
No cels or problems to report.
 
I just finished installing this but I am running a K&N filter. I had the ISR mod but the rubber part that connects to the TB ripped about 2 inches. Also my ISR mod failed pretty bad (basically the tub i used was too small outside diameter). Was an easy install and looks awesome I'm excited. I was getting better gas mileage with the ISR so i dont see why that would change with this.

I already have the Deck Plate Mod and running a K&N filter which I very lightly oil. Although the filter which came with the truck from the PO looks like he dragged it behind the truck for a few miles, never seen an air filter so beat up.

If there are no problems with installing the Airaid intake tube then I may go ahead and do so.
I kinda want to replace the air filter since this one is so beat up and a new K&N I think is around $50 or so.
So I figured spend an extra $100 and get a no oil filter with a cleaner intake tube wouldn't be a bad deal.

If I actually get better mileage even 1mpg I will take it.
Don't exactly want it to sound like a tank though.

I have the JR kit on mine, if you wanna see it in person give me a shout.

It's a nice kit, really cleans up the engine bay and free's up some air flow

I may take you up on that maybe next week or so.
My mom died last night around midnight so I am going to be tied up with lots of personal stuff for probably at least a week I imagine.
 
Heres a shot of mine. I usually fill up on Sunday nights and by Friday after work I'm down to 1/4 tank. With the ISR mod I would end on Friday with just a hair under 1/2. I really happy with the turn out, even if it is expensive.

Wow so you actually get a pretty good boost in mileage then with the Airaid on there.
I need that badly, I usually get right around 13.1mpg straight city driving.
If I just got 1mpg better mileage for this upcoming 7000+ mile trip it would save me about $100 in gas so would virtually pay for itself in just 2-3 weeks.
 
I don't know the actual numbers, but it was an improvement. I too am going on a 4400 mile trip in June and then a big move from Phx to Seattle so it will pay for itself during those.
 
I have the airaid MIT too. I really like it. It's an easy enough mod to make yourself, but I loved the way it looked. As for performance gains, and mileage increases. I've seen nothing to brag about, but it sounds cool when you are WOT.
 
Cool I am going to go ahead an order one then, most everything seems positive.

I found it on Amazon for $158.89 for the intake tube and the oil free air filter.
Plus its Amazon Prime so its free 2 day shipping.

BTW, I pulled the EFI relay to let it reset while I did the install. Read somewhere its good to have it reset after this type of mod. Just a heads up.
 
Under the hood by the battery you will find a fuse box. The top is nicely labelled and you will see there is a EFI relay (large black box looking) and a EFI fuse which I believe is a 20A fuse. You can see part of the fuse box in the picture on page 1 of this thread. I just pulled mine for the duration of the install. Again this is just something I read to do to allow it to reset but I dont know if it holds true. It is simple to pull so i figured why not.

Installed a new K&N hi-flow air filter and pulled the EFI relay for 30 minutes.:happy:
 
Kit came yesterday, installed it today.
Took me about 30 minutes or so total.
I always take my time, I grease everything with good grease like the clamps, a little bit on inside edge of rubber etc.
Throttle body was clean as a whistle so didn't need to touch that.

Things I notice right off is the throttle response is much better.
Runs very nicely at idle, does seem to have a bit more giddy up surprisingly.
The only real "sound" difference that I notice is just when giving it some gas especially full throttle it has a throatier note and just wee bit louder but not much.

Just traveling down the road giving just enough gas to stay at speed I notice no real difference in sound.

Now I just need to put a couple tanks of gas through it to see if I get any better MPG.

I noticed the old beat up K&N I just replaced that a bit of Tree Pollen had gotten past it, as just on the other side of filter inside the Air Box there was a small amount of pollen.
I did not notice any at the end of the intake tube so maybe it did not get any further but that old K&N was beat up and was very thin, had to have an adapter dohickey to get it to fit in the air box.
This new filter fits right in and it at least twice as thick which means more than double the surface area.

So far I very pleased with it.

I just hope I get an extra 1 mpg then I will be ecstatic.
 
Glad you like it! I love mine. The sound doesn't bother me either. I only notice it when I am getting onto the highway. I do 90% of my driving on the highway and I noticed a considerable difference when I need to pass or merge. Like you said its mostly throttle response. I think you will see some gains in mpg, I certainly have.
I have always been loyal to K&N, but I have to tell you if I knew it needed the adapter piece to fit in properly I would have just ordered the Airaid filter instead. But for now I am extremely happy with all my set ups.
As for install, I took about the same time as well. I always take extra time. I also had a hell of a time getting mine on at first, I ended up loosening the airbox to get it all together.
Let me know if you do calculate the mpg. I never have, I just go by the needle. I used to barely make it through a work week on gas. Now I can go all week and into the weekend.
