Airlift 1000 with OME 906 Question?

Had a quick question regarding the Airlift 1000 bags and the OME 906 rear springs. I know I will have to cut down the bump stop cone to the last "bump". My question is will I need to add a puck to make up for the space of the extra 2" of lift? Or may just cut less of the bump stop? Anyone have any experience with this? Thanks in advance fellas!

I didn't use the puck. I didn't cut as much of the bump stop off as what the instructions said to do. I first mounted them so the air line was coming out the bottom, but I had a leak so I took them out and ended up running the lines through the top. Its was easier and better in my opinion to run them through the top.

For the life of me I couldn't figure where the leak was until I pulled them out and submerged one of the valves where you connect a bike bump to it to pump it up.. Inside that valve with needle nose pliers I turned it until it wasn't leaking anymore. Just a FYI in case you run into that problem, be sure to check the valve or valves if you use both.

BTW I love them. No sag at all when I'm loaded down on my camping trips. They don't leak at all now and stay pumped up. Always make sure your running at least 5 psi.

You also running the 906? I anticipated leaving one additional bump stop "bump" to accommodate for the lift. I'm assuming the idea is the bag needs something to rest on, thus preventing the sag? Or does the bag expanding outward on the coil prevent the sag?

Yes I'm running 906 with two trim packers. Yes they expand outwards more than actually up. They sort of fill in between the coils.

Airlifts Response....

" If you have aftermarket coil springs, the best way to get a good fit is going to be measuring the internal height and diameter of the coil spring itself with the vehicle on the ground at normal ride height. With those measurements we will be able to get a good fit. I wouldn't recommend installing those bags with the jounce bumper, that would most likely rub on the pack and cause a puncture."

It looks like they want you to cut as much off the bump stop as possible. I'll try and get a measurement off the inside of the spring this weekend and see what they say.

Good to know. If I remember right I think I have a gap when mine are pumped up between the bump stop and the top of the bag. Though I haven't flexed with them in so I'm not sure how that will affect it. Keep me posted as I'm curious to know.

Looks like the internal spring measurement of the OME 906 without any trim packers is 4.5in internal diameter and 8in from the axle perch to the top of the bump stop where airlift recommends to cut to. I replied to airlift with the measurements so we'll see what they say.

"With those coil spring dimensions you are going to want to use kit number 60732. Those bags are 4.35 X 7. You always want to go about an inch short so the bags aren't rubbing on the top or bottom spring perch"

I may order these in about a week and give them a try. I'll keep the post update when installed.

Thanks for reporting back. I had already purchased the bags to fit in stock coils then decided to lift it afterwards. Seems like I have about a inch of space so it sounds like I'm in the green. Thanks for posting the info as its good to know what's best for the bags.

I just wanted to update this thread. I recently changed from 906's to 890's and when towing the 890's are defiantly a bit soft. I took some additional measurements and contacted airlift. I measured around 8.5" from the bottom of the axle, to the jounce bumper (bumpstop) where the airlift instruction tells you to cut. The said to use a 60824 kit which has a 4.35x8" bag dimension. I decided to order the kit an it should be here tomorrow. I'll post my results when installed.

This may be a option for people with 3" of lift who don't want to use the 2.5" puck airlift provides with the factory kit. :thumb3:

So does this mean when I do eventually lift mine hopefully that I wouldn't be able to use the stock airlift bags that I already have?

You'll have to make up the gap that you lift with a spacer. I believe the standard 60743 kit (which you probably have) comes with a 2.5" spacer for that purpose. I just was trying to avoid using a spacer. I've seen a bunch of people use the standard 4runner kit with a lift.

I was told by the tech support guy at Firestone that the bags must not touch the top and bottom or they will burst under load - they are not designed to get longer with pressure but wider - so they bolster in-between the coil wraps.

Just like run 4 fun said.

You are correct there needs to be some gap between the bag and the bump stop. Airlift recommends about a inch. I contacted them about the bag busting and they indicated that the bag would have to be a few inches too long for that to happen.

Reporting in. Just took my runner on a 100 mile off road trip packed down with 4 mountain bikes on the hitch, the back full of coolers, and safari rack full of camping gear. Bags filled to 25 psi and they did really well off road and on road. Had a couple good portions of flexing and a lot of it was really bumpy on slickbrock. Bags did amazing. They are the bags for the original coils for the 4runner, but I put them in the 906 coils.

i ran the airlift bags for a long time -they are what came on my 4runner when i bought it, then over time they developed a leak that got worse and worse... anyhow i ended up replacing them with the firestone bags, not that i have anything bad to say about the airlift bags, but i wanted to try something else to see how they worked and how long they lasted (i dont know how long the airlift bags lasted as they were in the rig when i bought it). one thing i like about the firestone bags is they are designed to fill the whole coil, no spacer puck is used. so for me with my lift, i used the old spacer puck from the airlift kit with the new firestone kit, and it came out perfect.

that spacer puck in the airlift kit is designed to run with a stock rig, no lift, the bags are very small and limited, if you are gonna use an air bag kit on a lifted rig even with a slight lift i recommend using the firestone bags. maybe call airlift and see if they will sell just the spacer puck, and use that like i did. thats what im gonna try and do with my GX when i lift it. if you deflate the bags completely they do not affect articulation or flex.

How much space resides between the top of the bag and bump stop area? Just curious?

i had no secondary coil, or that cone bumpstop what every you want to call it? it was completely removed. with that spacer in there it takes up the room.

i would not use that secondary coil thing. as it would not evenly spread out the load on the bag. it will put the weight of the vehicle on a much narrower portion of the bag and the potential for bag failure would become much higher.

I have a question regarding this system. I have the OME coils and routed the hose through the top without the spacer. I have about an inch of space at ride height and 7 psi. Air bags move up and down inside the coil and I assume this is normal. I am a bit worried about the fitting on top of the air bag as it goes into the hole of the coil cup during compression but seems to clear it fine. I am thinking of rerouting it downwards but don't have time to tear into it again.

My question is how are these supposed to work. Do they compress outwards to prevent the spring from compressing and stops the truck from sagging once the bumpstop rests on the bag? Or are they are supposed to stop the truck from sagging AT ALL?

I did a test.

At 7 psi, I threw in 5 concrete blocks, a 70 lb sandbag, and a 60 lb rock. I lost 1" of height.

at 32 psi, I threw in the same weight and lost 3/4".

I am still losing about an inch of height and I assume this is normal and I will not lose anymore once the bumps are resting on the bag?

I was under the assumption that it prevents the truck from sagging and you can air them up to regain height. I have to haul 1000 lbs of pellets from across town about 6 times a year and I get a pretty nice sag and hoping this prevents it.
