Alarm Went Off for NO REASON???

tonight my 04 4runner alarm's went off. It was dark (street light recently died), I couldn't make up my mind on whether to take a gun or not. I decided not to, but gave the gun to the wife & have her stand guard by the door. I took a flashlight and found nothing... no obvious forced entry, no broken glass.

Did the alarm just go off for no reason??? I checked the keyholes, they didn't seem anything unusual, the key still works in them. the night was sprinkly (lightly raining).

I thought the toyota alarms only go off when the door is opened w/o a key? some1 clue me in.

I Cannot help you out with this one, that really is strange. I can however recommend a motion detection camera to see if someone is messing with the vehicle... Good luck

According to the Owners Manual, here's when the alarm goes off:

To deter vehicle theft, the system is designed to sound an alarm if any of the side doors, back door or hood is forcibly unlocked or opened or the battery terminal is disconnected and then reconnected when the vehicle is locked.

The alarm blows the horn intermittently and flashes the headlights, tail lights and turn signal lights, and turns on the interior and luggage compartment lights.

If nobody tried to force a door open, then maybe it thought there was a problem with the battery. Could a battery cable be loose or corroded?

Do you have the upgraded security system (RS3200 I think)? It has a glass breakage sensor.

My alarm went off one day when I was searching for my keys in my pockets and sat a coke can on my sunroof glass. I guess the noise from my coke can hitting the glass tripped the alarm b/c it started going off. Maybe something hit your glass or something to trigger it... I dont know. I have stood on the running boards before and the truck moved quite a bit without the alarm going off.

Do you have the factory alarm or an aftermarket alarm? Aftermarket alarms can go off if somebody walks too close to the vehicle.

Do you have a shock sensor hooked up to the factory alarm?

Many cars in the neighbor with aftermarket alarms (most have shock sensors) usually have false alarms when a motorcycle or a car with a fart can exhaust drives by, or when it gets really windy setting it off.

My anti theft system in my 04 runner doesn't even work! I tested it by locking the doors and trying to open them from the inside, not even a tweet.

The SR5 and Sport models only come with remote keyless entry and engine immobilizer. On the Limited, the anti-theft alarm comes as standard equipment. You would have to add the Toyota alarm to an SR5 or Sport as a dealer option.

Mark is right... SR5 and SE do not come with Anti-theft (rs3200), only engine immobilizer and panic button (from the key fob). Maybe a low battery on your remote or did something fall and hit it?

this happened to me when i had a maxima...the culprit was the trunk latch shorted for no reason. one new latch later was all it took.

The alarm that comes in the Limited model...you can get as a factory installed option on the Sport...I have it in mine...works just like manual states.

It's also an option for the SR5 but you have to request it.
