Also looking to buy

I'm also looking to buy a used runner. Probably somewhere in the '99 to '01 range.

I've read some replys to a recent post on basically the same subject, but I have a few more questions.

I was kinda looking at Explorers as well, but after signing onto a forum for those I learned that there are inherant problems with the Tranny and rear end. Something I don't want to deal with.

Are there any "issues" with the 4runners in the '99 to '00 range that I should be aware of?

I really hate poor fit and finish as well. Squeaks and rattles drive me nuts.

I plan on owning it for upwards of 200,000 miles.

Thanks

Does that mean there are no issues whatsoever?

I plan on eventually hitting the 200,000 mile club and I would really like to find out if there are any potentially expensive problems that occur occaiaionally on these trucks.

If you don't know of any, please let me know that too,

Thanks

i know your looking to buy a 99-01, just for a point of refference, my 97 runs like a dream. squeaks and what not drive me nuts and ive got none tieh the 97. AMAZING trucks i tell ya. ive heard no negatives about 99-01. only that they got better as years progressed as far as ride comfort.

I have a 99', and it is a great off road vehicle as well as a daily driver, I am impressed with the clearance it has. The only part I have had to replace is the water pump last year. And that was STILL on warranty. Of course I am bias, as I will never buy another vehicle other than a Toyota. My dad was a big Ford man when I was growing up, and after seeing him working on them constantly I swore I would never buy one!

I just bought my 00 Limited, so I can't really tell you of any problems I've had. I would never opt for a Ford tho, I will never buy a domestic vehicle of any kind. The T4R was the only SUV I was considering when I sold my 99 prelude. Well, other than the BMW X5, but I cant afford one of those. The quality of imported cars are insane compared to domestics. The only reason I bought the 4Runner is because I know I can trust a Toyota...well and the fact that I like the way it looks. I think you'll enjoy one, dont go with an explorer tho.

Careful what you say about Fords. I happen to be big Ford man.
At the same time I know the Ex's have transmission issues.
I can't wait till I can afford one of the new Mustang GT's.
Sorry but Toyota just doesn't have anything to compare to that or even the muscle cars of the '60's and '70's. That American V8 just has something most others don't and probably never will.

All that being said, Where is the T4R made? I'm assuming America.

Also, what kind of H.P. can I expect from a V6?

all the 4runners are built in Japan. still the case for a few more years even though toyota is opening that huge truck plant in san antonio.

v6 has around 180-190 hp. not great, but still a great truck.
I have the 03 (newer body) with the land cruiser v8. tons of power. 260 hp, i think.

but i don't think any of us buy those too much for hp as we do because they just last forever. I've had 2 jeeps, 1 explorer...all garbage compared to my t4r. it's just night and day.

yeah, if you're looking for a great sports car or vehicle with tons of muscle, then you're on the wrong forum.

However, it sounds like you're looking for a decent mid-size SUV that will last you forever. Aside from maybe a Pathfinder (and even those I don't know much about), I don't know of another vehicle in your price range that fits that bill as well as a 4Runner.

I've not heard of any issues with those year models. When you search around here, 95% of the threads you'll find are about people modding their vehicles, as opposed to a bunch of threads talking about repairs and problems - that's always a good sign...

I guess you totally forgot about the 93-99 Supra! Which could spank a GT all over the track! Hands down, Toyota is a better built car regardless of coupe, sedan, truck, SUV.

There are couples of common problems in 3-rd Gen 4Runners: rear axel seals may leak and some people have problems with warping front rotors.
As far as my personal experience I have not faced any problems so far: I have 93K on mine 4Runner and I use it on and off road and also pull 3500 Lbs boat with it (in Texas heat).
The only recommendation I have is to look for 1999 model (1999 sits 1

Dont take offense to anything we said, we thought you entered this forum on information regarding a RELIABLE vehicle. As far as muscle cars, yeah Ford, Chevy, and Dodge have toyota beat on every scale if your talking about 60's and 70's. I like Ford Mustangs, but I would never buy one, because I don't believe it would be a good long-term investment.

I agree. I don't believe Ford or Chevy wouldn't last as long as a Toyota 4Runner. But i have to admit, since i'm a rice racer person, i do like muscle cars just because it's a nice looking classic car and it's quicker than any ricer.

But I found out that, one of my co-worker owned 4(four) T4R. Thought that was amazing. Her feedback about the 4runner is that it's a nice ride plus rarely any maintenance. I thought that was crazy how a person would own a 4Runner that much. Her daughter also drives a 4runner which i believe that she's a 4Runner lover. =)

As long as you get your timing belt done in a timely manner (or had it done by 90k) and the Runner has had it's scheduled maintenance they are generally trouble free and I have 113k on mine and the ONLY thing that was actually fixed was the rear axle seals which commonly go out around 100k.
You would also be surprised how little my truck squeaks for the miles on it and all the power windows go up and down in sync which most vehicles usually have a slow one.
I also had a compression check on the engine and the cylinder pressure was within 2psi of when it was new across all 6 cylinders.
I also owned a '97 which had the axle seals go out at 98k and I had simlar results with it's engine compression.
The '97 was nice but the '99 was such an upgrade along with it being the Sport edition and I'm very happy with mine but a few more MPGs would be nice.

I also recommend avoiding brake places for the axle seal replacement so either go to the delaership or better yet use your own trusted mechanic but make sure you use OEM Toyota seals as I've seen trouble with the aftermarket ones.

No, didn't forget about the Supra. Great car, good looks, even wanted one for a while.

But it still doesn't have a V8 or the "feel" or the rumble of the V8.
Mustangs have been voted best bang for the buck so many times I can't count.
Plus they're still making them. Haven't seen to many Supras lately.

I'm not looking for any battles here, so please don't mis-interpert that from me.

There is an appeal that the American Muscle cars have that no-one else does, and probably never will.

So that you know where I am coming from;

I LOVE great cars. It doesn't matter the brand (except Chevy's, For some reason I really don't care for any of them. Vette excluded).

I would love a BMW M3, or an older 635 CSI. I would love a Vette, or a Viper, or a Ford GT, A Supra would be good too, I like the newer MR2 as well. and many many others.

There is much more to a car than performance. There is style and with many of the older muscle cars things that I have a hard time putting into words.

But bottom line, for me, my dream car is a '69 Mach 1 428 SCJ Mustang w/ a 4 speed.
My dream truck would be a mid '60s Ford F-250 High boy w/ a big block and a 4 speed.
But at least for now those are only dreams

The reason that I'm looking to buy a T4R is that I'm 41 years old, I have a wife, 2 kids, 2 dogs, about 15 fish, a boat and a mortagage and 2 car payments. I NEED practicality and reliability. I WANT fun and lots of power. But fun and lots of power aren't in the cards for me right now.

Soooo, 180-190 hp, but that's stock and I would be modifying the air box and do a cat back exhaust and probably replace plugs and wires along w/ synthetic oil, so that should bump it up a little.

What's the Towing Capacity? My boat is about 3500 lbs.

No offense taken on anything, so don't worry about that. This is all good info and i appreciate what you are all sharing. and yes, I'm in the right forum.

I will say one thing, The Ford V8 is good for about 240hp and gets about the same MPG as the T4R. But I think reliability is going to win out.

Towing is 5000lbs on the Runner.

Best bang for your buck could be the Supra but due to them not making them anymore, much nicer than a Mustang and being featured in F&TF jacked up it's resale value. Only 7000 turbos were imported into the US.

I like the fact that they are rare and everybody isn't driving one (I like the new Mustang but the novelty wore off after the first hundred or so I've seen) and their easy extraction of horsepower is what makes them a popular choice for the dragstrip.
Twin turbo Supras lay down about 285whp in stock trim and by just adding a full 3" turboback exhaust you just added rougly 70whp to the mix and you finish off with a filter and a manual boostcontroller and you've pretty much maxxed out the stock twins but for less than $1000 you should be roughly at 430whp which makes the Supra about a 500hp car and will run 11s at the strip.
Also the 3 liter in-line 6 will lay down nearly 700whp with never having to touch the motor but the clutch will be a different story. Their 6 speeds are pretty stout too.Toyotas stock bottom end has been proven to hold nearly 900whp but a rebuild would be smarter in the long run.

No demand for them when they were new due to it's $44k pricetag in '97 and insurance cost were initially high on them. The MR2,RX7,300Z turbos also went the same way.

IMO the Supras looks still hold up from when they were new 13 years ago and there aren't too many cars that can say that.

Close to the price of a base model Vette. But they all unfortunately lacked something the Vette didn't. - heritage. (and a V8)

Not to say they aren't world class for the price, they are in deed. At least they brought back the 350Z. And I thought they were making a MR2 again, or am I mistaken? (Had a '72 240Z once, loved it, tons a fun)

But they're still missing the V8
