Alternate SUV/TRUCK to 3rd Gen

I searched and could not find a thread on this. There have got to be some out there but i had no luck. I love my third gen and have nothing but good things to say about it. I travel heavily for work and am looking to get another vehicle. I am undecided but will probably keep my3rd gen and take it of DD duty. I am looking for a larger newer SUV with more power that is good for long road trips but can still do some off-roading. I am considering Lexus and Toyota vehicles.

I was hoping someone could point in the direction of what engine/drivetrain to look for and what other vehicles you have had good luck with. If there is already a thread that covers this I'll take the link!

I'm with you man. I refuse to sell my 3rd gen but I'm going to get another vehicle in the next year or two when im in the military. Something more fuel efficient.

It needs to be German or Japanese. Im thinking about getting a newer model Tacoma or V8 Tundra and putting some nice all terrains on it with a mild lift. Not gonna go crazy, that's what my 3rd gen is for

As long as you're fine with the MPGs, this could be a great option. I was on the fence between a 4R and a 100 series, but at that point the MPG, overall expense and size were the factors holding me back. My cousin has one for his work truck and it's a nice ride for sure.

If I was looking at new vehicles, I'd be looking at a Tacoma TRD.

So a mid 2000's Landcruiser or the LX 470 both have the 4.7 2UZ FE motor. Is that a pretty good drivetrain? It looks like those would fit my criteria nicely.

i agree, the next vehicle i get will be something with a bed and double cab. The roll down rear window can only save you so many times when trying to hall stuff. The rear leaf springs instead of coils does alot for allowing a heavier load without bottoming out the suspension.

Ive had my eye on the newish f150 with the 3.5lTT, good power and decent gas mileage. And you can tow a good sized boat or camper. (but price tag is hefty fow 3/4 ton trucks nowadays).

Im not a huge fan of the Fords newer bodys but I wont dog them. Wifes current vehicle is a 1999 Ford Expedition that we have owned for over 10 years and I have only done brakes, fuel pump and now a coil back needs replaced. Has about 170k miles.

Me and wife been looking over a year for a the perfect Tacoma. She wants black and newer year. I want TRD and older year with low mileage to save money. Pretty much been impossible to find a 2007+ Double cab, black, TRD Offroad w/locker at a good price and low miles.

My father owns an '09 GX470 and it's a very nice vehicle. Would be a great option. For me I want something with a bed like a Tacoma. My 4R fills my SUV needs

I can't wait till I get a house and can park my 3rd gen and only use it for camping trips or mall crawling))) i need something more fuel efficient since I drive alot for work. I fill up every other day, lol.

I think the OP should get a vehicle that compliments what you have, not a different version of the same thing. I have a single cab 2.7 5 speed tacoma with a full rack and my 4runner. The truck is fun to drive better on gas and with a full rack you can do things you just can't do with the 4runner. Think about what you are really going to do with the vehicle. If all you end up doing with it is driving to work just get a commuter and have the 4runner as your fun exploring vehicle.

As the above comment says, it'd be cool to have a ride that complements your 4Runner such as a Tacoma. How bad ass would it be to have your 3rd gen parked next to a tacoma.
