alternative to painting rear axle?

Hey guys, I have sanded down my rear axle and painted it twice now. The first time was a quick fix just to last until I could spend more time on it. The second time I sanded down the paint and remaining rust( its really not that rusty). Then I used rustroleum to paint it. I checked under there the other day and it looks like the paint is chipping off already and new rust is forming. I put a few good coats on but maybe I did something wrong? I was wondering if anything thicker could be applied to protect it? Possibly a spray on bed liner in a can or something? Would that be alright, or would it not be a good idea?

Anyway, what have you guys done to protect your rear axles from rust?

Get a can or two of rubberized under coating and lay it on pretty thick, I think some of the under coatings are paintable, too.

You need to use good undercarriage paint. I used Eastwood products back in December and my whole undercarriage looks like new still. I first sanded everything with a wire wheel. Then applied their rust converter to the rusty areas. Then everything got painted in rust encapsulator, even whatever still had paint. Finally I added a coat of their extreme chassis black. The paint isn't cheap, but it was worth the price.

I personally just lay under my rig for an hour and "black wash" all my underside stuff a couple times a year.

You might want to think about what a heavy / thick coating of anything will do to heat dissipation. i remember being told to never apply undercoating to the axle because of this.

what ever you use you have to let it set up for a few days to cure, over night isnt good enough, the paint wont cure or harden correctly. give it 3 or so days with out use and you will have better results
