Alternator Install at Dealer

My alternator quit over the weekend here in Houston. I also replaced my battery as it was the original. Here is what I was charged:

Alternator: $382.21
27F Battery: $123.89
Labor: $520.00
Total: $1026.10 + Tax

Yep, screw that noise. I did mine myself. I can't imagine the V8 is that much harder than the V6, is it?
 
I think the v8 has to be removed from the wheel well. I’m not positive but it’s a bit more complicated than the v6.
 
Yes it is the "never pay for the same service twice" lifetime warranty...who knows exactly what that means though, I didn't read the fine print.

I have no doubt that I was hosed on the labor, just wondered how bad :)
 
Same here. Did the alternator last Thursday (no battery) but labor was only about $300 for me. I had the serpentine belt replaced at the same time since they had to take it off anyway to do the alternator. Total was just over $910. That's for belt, alternator, oil change, labor and taxes.

And keep in mind that's Canadian funds so it about 25% cheaper in US dollars.

So what they are saying is that replacing the alternator takes 1/2 the time as changing the timing belt? LOLOLOL. I could be wrong, but I believe it is a 2 hr job by the book although an experienced mechanic can do it in 1/2 the time.

Serpentine, not timing.
 
Don McGill? I paid $900 for the same thing (minus the battery) last September. My alternator was dead, and the truck barely limped to the dealership, so I didn't have time to shop around. But the lifetime warranty made me go ahead and do it.

The way they explained the warranty to me is, if the alternator goes bad again, they replace it, and I don't pay a dime.
 
I did my alternator myself and took at least 4 hours. V8 is difficult but doable. Seems ok on labor, high on part cost (although my local is partznet/conicelli).
 
Don't Toyota dealers only offer rebuilt Denso alternators nowadays? I don't think it's brand new OEM Denso from Japan for $380. Rockauto sells a rebuilt Denso alternator for about $120, are these the same units?

The dealer's lifetime warranty without any mileage restrictions is good though.
 
[MENTION=67307]skyak[/MENTION] You should call the dealership and ask them what the labor rate is per hour. Seems quite excessive or I could be wrong.

The rebuilds go for about $250. I had a coupon and was about $220 or so.
