Am I the only Star Wars hater out there?

It's only a few more weeks 'till the latest installment of Star Wars is released and SW geeks are already camping out and dressed up.....I saw the original SW back in what..1978 and I thought it was teh biggest dispaly of derivative intellect I've ever seen. Just about eveyr cliche from every WWII movie, wester, Errol Flynn, movie ever made slopped together....

Han Solo and his buddy Chewbaca....cynical loner and sidekick who finds his true cause and gets with the program.....just like Bogart's Rick in Casablanca and coutless movies on the same theme.

Darth Vader and his all blacxk outfit (German Nazi SS uniforms were all black, especiually the Death's Head Units) and his coal bucket helmet..right out of WWII. How original.

"Storm troopers????" Come on the Gestapo already had that title 50 years ago...

Light sabers? Come on, folks, these "beings" can develop incredible space travel machines and they need to have sword fights? Basil Rathbone did it all in his swashbuckler movies.

Swigning across on a rope...Errol Flynn maybe? (pirate move plagiarism in the later installments?

Of course, let's not forget Luke Skywalker manning the twin cannons in the bubble canopy...right out of "12 Oclock High" and every WWII movie...yes, got that out of an old B17 Flying Fortress.....tail gunner Joe firing his twin .50.

The big cantina bar scene....right out of evey western bar movie...

Now the latest has the "being" peeking out from behind his hood....doesn't it remind you of the famous National Geographic camershot of Girl in Afghanistan? Real derivative imagination, stealing from every source.

OK, I've vented on SW geeks...back to work.

I bought my tix for the 12:01am showing several weeks ago. I guess that says where I stand on this issue.

No, you're not the only one. I thought i was alone on this too. While i wouldnt say that i hate all of of it, i really could give a f**k that there is another one coming out. I have not seen any of the newer released ones and am damn pround to say that. I have not seen all of the originals either, some parts here and there. I fall asleep if i try to watch them. Im not even going to go into what i think about the people that dress up and camp out.

I'm pretty much the only one of my friends/Family that can't stand Star Wars. I've never seen any of the movies new or old all the way through. I've seen clips of some, but that's all. I can't believe how crazy people go over these movies, I just laugh at 'em. C'mon now, people camping out to get tickets?? That's the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard. The parents of those 30 somethin' year old kids need to kick them out of their basements and "force" them to get a life :bash:!

The only "space" movie I've seen many times and loved is: Spaceballs!!

+1

I've been to more than one Sci-Fi convention and even got to meet Mark Hamill (Luke Skywalker for those not enlightened).

I've been a fan since I saw the first one in the RKO theater in NYC.

It was and still is hugely successful because it IS a very simple concept. Good versus Evil... Damsels in distress... An ultra bad, bad guy... etc, etc, etc.

It's those very items you didn't like, sword fights, swinging on ropes, the proud few good guys against the evil many bad ones.

All these very basic concepts are what gives the whole Star Wars saga it's magic.

Not everything has to have 10 sub-plots.

Dorkfest! :D

I just said I had tix already. It was a point and click affair on-line. No way I'm waiting in line, camping out, or dressing up like a clown for this. I just want to see the movie before I hear everything about it.

I'm not a "hater" so to speak, but I can definetly live without it. The newer one (can't remember the name, but from just a few years ago) just plain sucks :p

Wow ollie,you are quite observant.

Lucas said back in '77 exactly where he got the ideas and situations from for SW. That was the idea to bring those elements we were used to and put them in an unfamiliar world and it worked. Lucas permeated world culture (how many people don't know what the Force is?) and advanced movies to where we are today and LucasFilm invented so much technology even the PIXAR computer then sold it to Disney.

Let me guess that you are well into your 40s? Yes?? Or were you too busy listening to disco and watching re-runs of Star Trek to care about SW or were you young (under 15) when you saw it but got stuck in the minority of kids and just enjoyed Hot Wheels too much to notice space Ships?

I'm teasing so don't flame me and yes,I'm a pretty big fan but I also liked girls back then and still enjoy them today. ;);)

The new one will be the pay off and I too was really dissappointed with Ep.I and Ep. II was mildly better. Hey man,Darth Vader is back and who's truly a better villian and more recognizeable?

I was born 40 so I guess i'm only 4 years old at 44.....

Lucas is a billionaire from his movies and toys and merchandising and I'm not so I guess he's right and I 'm wrong.

Saw it when I was either 17-18....in my freshman year at Univ. of Calif at San Diego....don't like Star Trek either but I won't rant and rave on Trekkie geeks since I would sound more of a crotchety old fart than I really am...but I would have leia'ed Pricess Leia :D

On the other hadn......Barberella....Hanoi Jane Fonda back then. oh man...my rocket ship was up and ready for take off....:D :D

I wouldn't call myself a sci-fi guy but it is interesting to see how this story has unfolded. Remember watching the original as a kid and it is pretty cool that they are explaining how all this started. Other than that, I could care less.

Well, I guess there are some movies/sagas that have die hard fans as well as others who could care less. As for me, I'm waiting for the release. The same could be said about The Lord Of The Rings. I think it's up there on my favorite list, but I know some people who fell asleep in the movie theater watching it. A client of mine once told me that he can't believe that people would pay good money to watch a boring movie like LOTR. Everyone has their own opinion.

40 seems to be the age that you either were into SW or it was just another movie and under 25 seems to be a cut off of the true fans on the young side with exceptions to both sides of course.

Even so my 5 year old nephew loves Spiderman but seems to be interested in Ep.III (ok,I helped and bought him his first action figures);my niece who is almost 3 oddly loves Darth Vader but it still slightly scared of him and of course she loves Princess Leia so maybe there is a last gasp for Lucas to grasp a generation to sell more merchandise too for the next 40 years. ;)

I liked LOTR but IMO those movies were a bit long for the average theater goer and got bogged down trying to tell the story (like Ep.I) but it had good action sequences but LOTR never had the cultural impact of SW which had little to compare with back in '77.
