Annual 1yr/20k miles Engine Oil Change

So i saw this and thought I would start a conversation on this and what like minded parts may think of this concept.

Mobile has introduced a new technology in engine oil evolution. Changing oil annually or every 20,000 miles. I don't think that this is something that will run over greatly. Even though you might not need to change oil, I wonder if people will still check their oil levels or just forget to do related fluid checks during maintenance light coming on. New Technology? Amsoil's Signature Synthetic has been doing that for at least a few years if not more. I've been running Amsoils 5w-30 Signature Synthetic with their extended oil filter for a while now (I run 1yr/10k intervals with oil analysis, but severe service is 1yr/15k and normal is 1yr/25k with the correct filter.)

It works great so far, I may actually push the interval to 15k, but I usually don't drive more than 10k in a year historically speaking. As for people checking their oil? Most people these days can't understand what the Tire Pressure Light means when there's a screen telling you exactly how much PSI your tires have in the tires. So that doesn't surprise me at all, most car owners have no idea what they are doing when operating their multi-ton death traps.

I think what Mobil did was actually make this 'new' oil full synthetic instead of a synth/dino blend. I've used Amsoil 100k mile/10-yr 75w-90 gear oil since 1990 also. Not only is Amsoil a great product, I'm also supporting local small business because their distributors are just that, local small business.

To be fair, I'm not saying Mobil1 is a not a good oil. I just figured I'd point out that that Mobil1 isn't the first one to do it.

For what it costs, and the lack of frequency/time involved, I just follow the maintenance schedule and use OEM recommendations. Canadian intervals are only 5,000 miles but I'm only at the dealership 2.5 times per year so not a big deal.

This sounds cool but the savings aren't worth it to me.

Been doing 20 thousand mile oil change intervals with Amsoil 5W30 fully synthetic and using the Amsoil oil filter since I purchased my vehicle brand new. 288000 miles later no issues or problems runs like it still has under 100k on it.

For the price of oil compared to the price of premature engine failure, I'll stick to my 8000KM oil changes. Even then the oil comes out black. Just my $.02

These are all interesting comments. I was aware of the Amsoil products and love them in the motorcycles. They do exceptionally well and local support (@flipflopnfly). I just wanted to see if anyone has tried the Mobile1 and if someone would mention the Amsoil as well. I haven't tried them in the cars/trucks but maybe i should give them a try.

Wondering how good Lucus Oil really is on lubrication. I would suspect very well given how heavy they advertise. Lend me a penny for your thoughts on that.

Amazon has the Mobil one regular synthetic and EP pretty cheap right now.
I'm not sure if the deal is exclusive to Amazon Prime members but it says that under the regular synthetic sale price.

standard motor oil to synthetic oil

Hello gang,

I am a new member so still unable to create a thread. I thought this would be a good place to ask this question.

I recently purchased an 01 4R SR5 sport v6 4wd. The previous owner followed manufacturer recommendations on oil changes, both with type and interval. He has run non-synthetic motor oil for the last 12 years of the vehicles life.

Technically, I guess I am looking for recommendations for you all...Should I continue with the standard motor oil, or make the switch to a synthetic motor oil? I've run synthetic in my past two vehicles, neither of which were Toyota, but the one vehicle, which my brother now owns, has 290K on it. My other current vehicle is still fresh with 135K. Obviously, there is other maintenance involved in prolonging the life of a vehicle, which I understand.

Synthetic is obviously more expensive but I've typically been able to get more miles in between changes with synthetic.

Any insight would be appreciated folks.

There is a forum called bobistheoilguy. You can see where people are getting their oil analyzed at different intervals throughout their mileage.

20k oil change intervals are fine as long as your engine is running well. Many of these guys change the filter part of the way through the life of the oil though.

Personally, I'll stick to 10k mile intervals and have my oil analyzed every couple of oil changes. If I'm changing the filter I might as well change the oil while I'm there.

a) Our Gen3's have to many grease fittings, for a 20,000 mile oil change frequency.

AMSOIL Synthetic Multi-Purpose Grease NLGI #2 ...would help greatly.

b) A filter change at 10,000 mile intervals, is also good preventive maintenance / along with the added grease job.

^^ Personally, I change oil & filter, every 10,000 Km (= 6,210 miles)...only using premium supplies, as pictured.
- Pennzoil Ultra Platinum synthetic (base stock is Natural gas & 99.5% pure)
- WIX XP Platinum synthetic media filter, is long life (re-branded for Amsoil)
At time of change, my Pennzoil Ultra Platinum oil has still retained 1/2 of its honey color.
- so I don't feel the need, to do oil analysis...as the used oil, never gets black
- I get my WIX XP filters cheap, from RockAuto / saving $10 per XP filter, dot buying at AutoZone
- so I switched from expensive Amsoil, 2 years ago
- Mobil1 reformulated years ago & their products tend to get cheapened / I'm not interested in their Marketing hype

In SUMMARY - It's not costing any more using premium supplies, because I safely stretch out the oil change.
- and I enjoy added engine protection, for Free / especially during cold winter months, during engine startup

Bought my '07 4Runner in 2012 with 72,000 miles. Now has 103,500 miles. Since day 1 I've used Mobil 1 "High Mileage" synthetic w/Toyota OEM oil filters, and it doesn't burn any oil between 5,000 mile changes. What more can you ask of your oil? Couldn't be happier with Mobil 1. I've learned that WalMart is the cheapest place to buy it.
