I'll just chime in with one other option and some thoughts. There are some very large LT265/70R17 tires out there (the Yokohama I run is a true 32" OD tire and the LT Falken AT3W is at 31.9 inches).
If you look at the 275/70R17 BF-G, you're at 32.2 inches and the 285/70R17 that everyone loves is 32.8 inches. Certain manufacturers including BF-G run smaller I believe than reported also while some like Falken typically run slightly over-sized.
In most cases the extra 0.5 inch of clearance you'll get from a nominally larger 33 inch tire is not going to be make and break versus a ~32.
I'm not saying there is anything wrong with doing a 33 per-say. Just not all 33s are created equal by any means. When I stepped up from my P-rated Terra Grapplers that came on my Pro to the Yokohama's, the visual difference was noticeable with the slightly larger tire and more so, the deeper tread.
I actually think the biggest visual difference from a 285 usually is related to the width and overall track width, not the height. When folks go to aftermarket wheels also, the offset difference often is doing it as much as the tire.
Most rubbing problems on 4Runners are more related to width also keep in mind, why running a 255/80R17 with no mods may be possible (and those tires are usually in the 33.3 to 33.5 inch diameter range). For clearance alone without rubbing problems, nothing probably beats a pizza cutter (if you don't mind the narrow tire look).
