Another 3rd Gen Lost [PICS]

My son got his driver's license this past Monday afternoon. Tuesday morning my '97 was totaled after my son was t-boned at an intersection. He was hit just behind the driver's door as he was making a left turn. The 4Runner rolled onto the roof and then back onto its passenger side, and my son was trapped in the car until rescue arrived and punched out the sunroof to extricate him. Folks, he came out of that vehicle completely unharmed. The other vehicle was traveling about 50mph, and its driver was also unharmed (2005 Pathfinder). Thank God they're both okay.

I've had that 4Runner since new. It's 210k miles saw nearly all of this country. I brought my kids home from the hospital in that vehicle. Lots of sentimental value. It was in fantastic shape, and I had thought it would become my project car if it survived the kids through high school. In the end that was not to be. However, it did its job and protected my son in learning a very hard lesson (look left again!) WAY too soon in his driving career.

Pics are attached. You can see they managed to strap down the cargo rack and carrier onto the 4Runner backwards before towing. It had come off the roof completely. Also, I managed to grab my wheels and tires from it at the salvage yard. Allstate was really good about everything. I'm sure my rates are about to skyrocket...

Moving on - I'm in the market for another 3rd Gen. I'm in the Denver metro area, and am willing to travel within reason. Main thing I'm looking for is a well-maintained, mechanically sound 4Runner. Minor cosmetic issues are no big deal. Hoping to stay under $7k. I've got a couple of leads so far, but would appreciate any others!

There's a '99 SR5 in Topeka, KS that caught my eye this morning: https://www.carfax.com/vehicle/JT3HN86R0X0204188. Just so happens I'm going to be in the area over 4th of July, so that could work if everything checks out. Anyone in the Topeka area?

God bless you all, and Happy Father's day tomorrow! I'll be enjoying this one, thanking my blessings with my son safe even though the 4Runner is gone.

Dang man, that is heartbreaking BUT like you said, what's important is the Toyota kept him safe!!! My 4Runner was totaled when my fiance was still driving it and she came out fairly unscathed as well. These are great vehicles. Such great memories you will always have with this one! Good luck with finding another...just make sure you do!!!!

That'll buff out! Seriously though, I hope your son isn't traumatized. Despite our attachment to these fine vehicles they are still only a car, which can be replaced. Oh boy, buying a new(to you) one, make it fun and take your time.

I hope the insurance treats you fairly, fight for it!

holy smokes! Glad he's ok.
My son is just now starting to drive also. he says he doesn't like my Runner and then I show him how safe they are even if old.

Make the new hunt a fun and successful one.

Condolences

Sorry for your loss. I’d be heartbroken as well.
Phoenix is a good spot for clean 4Runners. Gen 3’s in good shape go around $6k give or take. So, your budget should yield something nice.
Enjoy the search. That seems to be the best and worst thing about looking for a good used vehicle.
Anyway, if you find something in PHX. Id be glad to lay eyes on it for ya.
Best wishes,
MBF

Can't ever take time with family for granted, you never know what is next. Glad he's unharmed and able to spend the day with you tomorrow.

It's rather odd, but my decision to get a 3rd Gen was when we were hit by one. Same thing as your kid, making a left turn and a guy hits our car on the side, half the engine was sheared right off and he rolls his 4Runner with 4 dudes in there. All of them came out safe. These are well built and protect even people in the back seat in major collisions.

Man, so glad he is okay. And good to know that this old 4runner can keep me safe. Sorry to see such a loved truck go. But this is your opportunity to find one with any features you wish you had! Good luck!

wow that looks narly. the truck sacrifice was worth the life it protected. so glad everyone came out okay. happy father's day.

Glad the kid is ok - Happy Father’s Day! I’m a Pre Owned manager in the Denver Metro area and will help keep an eye out for you! We get them on trade(although every time a employee wants to buy them). 3rd Gens in Denver are common, but sky high prices come with it! People love them here.. rightfully so! All the trails, mountains...

Cheers!
