Few pics from yesterday on some of the open trails up here in Northern Colorado. My runner did great, but, the wife didnt have such a good day!!! Got to see a little herd of Elk too! Last Pic was the bad day part!!

Good thing you had the 4Runner as a JEEP recovery unit, lol looked like some fun trails. . till you got the "shaft"

Yeah, it was the front. Hers is all time 4 wheel drive, so I was leary at first, but just went ahead and dropped the shaft out of it. I was impressed though, she made it back out of the trail in 2wd without too much trouble, but most of the way back was all down hill.

It was old all of the above, lol, and after pulling it, partly my fault for not inspecting it good enough before we took it, but the shaft was seized. So the slip yoke wasnt operating as it should be. The yoke wasnt sliding in and out of the shaft, in turn pretty much pulling on the front part of her shaft, which yes, that was a bad design since they made it a cv joint right there. When she tried to bump up over one of those rocks, it made it over, but flexed the drivers side and immediately busted that joint. So, there is a local place here in Fort Collins that will rebuild it and install an actual U-joint in it for 195.00.
 
Ouch. Good thing you were able to get it out of there in 2wd. That could have been a really long ordeal otherwise.

That was my biggest fear! I just knew I was gonna have to try to winch her up a few of the hills, but she did good. Shes starting to learn how to drive the trails pretty good.

No, that was actually near the end of Ballard Road, off of Buckhorn. Out past Crystal Mountain and Moody Hill. Pretty easy trail, just rocky in places. It was fun, but I feel like we were defeated since we didnt finish it. So im getting her driveshaft rebuilt tomorrow, and plan to try to run it again this weekend or next!

I had a 96 ZJ before the 4Runner and had the exact same issue, the CV joint on the front driveshaft exploded when a spinning wheel suddenly caught traction. Do you have the V8 with the NP249 transfer case? If so you'll have a fun burnout machine until you get the repaired driveshaft in. :) $195 sounds like a reasonable deal to upgrade to a u-joint and after that you should have no problems.

That is eactly what happened too. Tire was sort of spinning in the air, then when it just barely came down and caught, it sounded like a turbine engine came apart!! And yes, its the v-8. Not sure the TC though. Kinda funny you said that about burning out. She likes to play in the mud a little, but since it is all time 4 wheel drive, she cant really sling the rear around any to play, but we hit some mud holes on the way back out of the trail after that shaft broke, and she had a blast, LOL. That rear was all over the place!!
And yeah, they are picking the shaft up today and ill have it back tomorrow with the u-joint in there instead for a buck ninety five.
