Just picked up our 16 TEP last weekend. Mods have started already....Husky Liners installed, GOBI rack ordered. Now for the lift. What is recommended? Seems the Toytec is what most recommend. We live in Colorado and will use it as it suppose to be used. Plan to run 285's on it.

Looking at the Toytec site....not sure if thats the best/cheapest place to buy or not there are quite a few options. Standard 2.0 or 2.5 coilovers, rear coils....reg or HD, add aftermarket UCA.....SPC/LIght racing or Total Chaos, then the rear shock options....Toytec or Bilstein. I have NO idea on some of that.

If there is a better place to buy from or a better way to do this Im all ears. Not going with some junk spacer lift.....we want something good that will last and have good road manners as well. thanks!

Best start here before someone comes in here and starts yelling, ha! Look at the photos, then look at sigs or build threads to see what they installed. Pretty simple.

Stay stock for awhile and drive it how you are going to use it. While you do that read everything you can on here about different lifts and all the pros and cons (and there are many for each choice) of every lift out there. There are hundreds of threafs just in this sub forum that will answer every question you have. Good luck, unless you are just doing it for looks and then it won't matter what you choose because every lift is mall rated...

Title says it all. I would rather not review the enormous amount of info and builds and just ask a question that has been beat to death thousands of different ways.

Research, research, research. Look at all the builds and what they have done. Figure out what YOU want you 4Runner to be capable of / look like and move forward from there.

Get a plan or idea then ask more specific questions.

Hard to go wrong.. but it's also hard to get the lift/suspension 100% right the first time.

One big issue is the spring rate. As you add weight... you need stiffer springs. If you know exactly where your build will end up it is easy, but most don't.

I usually encourage people to look at an OME lift and see if that meets their needs (just because they are bullet proof in my experince) If not, there are many other mid range to high end options that are good.. Its best to check out other peoples rides and get a feel for how different brands work...

ICON, Fox. Radflo, King... are all the higher end choices.. If you have KDSS, you will not be able to do long travel in the rear. Travel is what matters most for a a very capable trail rig, but the front is really limited because of IFS. You can get what they call extended travel (which is only about 1" more than most lifts, and it will require uniball UCAs). If you want to get crazy, you need Long travel all around and it is expensive and 100% not compatible with KDSS (so you probably purchased the wrong model if that is your plan).

BTW, put details in your sig (like if you have KDSS or not) and people will be able to give you better opinions...

Yup this... I've loved my toytec boss/saw setup, adding the rear bumper will now start the suspension mods again. Doh.

Same boat, what they said. Research. If it helps, I'm gonna go with the Toytec 3/2, LR UCAs, and some 275s. That should provide an easier upgrade path in the future if I upgrade, to say, OME, for heavier weight applications. That is until I change my mind again tomorrow about what's best for me.

I was pretty specific. I said we will wheel it in Colorado. We will run 285s. I even picked out a lift and ask specific questions about it.

This is not my first rodeo to offroading. Just to this particular vehicle. Dont do mall crawlin. Ive built up several rockcralers. The last was a 87 4runner. Dana 60/14 bolt on 43" SXs. 4 linked front/rear on Fox 14" C/O. LS engine/th350/NWF blackbox/NP205.

Yes I saw the post your lifted pics thread.....I dont want to look at pics and see what Joe Schmo built. Yeah he put the lift on and took pics.....but hows that workin out for him 6 months later?

Actually you weren't specific on the lift, many folks on here won't understand you are probably talking about the Toytec Boss because you didn't say that. They have three different Toytec lifts and your original post came across generic. I only assume that is what you mean because it's the only one they offer with a choice between 2 and 2.5 coilovers. So if you want good advice you gotta be a bit more specific, help the folks on here help you...

The regular Boss front works well here in Colorado, I and many others can attest to that, they didn't have the 2.5's when I bought and I'm not sure many on here even have it as its relatively new. (Looks to be back ordered right now anyway)

Sorry Toytec BOSS then. Yes the 2.5 is backordered. I was referring to the options it has to offer.....OR if there was a better lift that was more thought out. I dont mind spending the money for good products. Especially when it comes to suspension. Cheap=shit ride and bad road manners. With that said Im not looking to do a full out King remote reservoir C/O build either.

The problem with these lift threads is somebody buys X lift, takes pictures and says LOOK at me then you never hear back from them or what they think of there lift 6 months down the road when the new look has worn off and there front end is wore out, tires are wore funny and they HATE it because it sucks to drive it. Ive been that guy in a 2007 Dodge 2500 C/C 4x4 Cummins truck. Literally hated that truck after I put a mid grade 6" lift on it with 37's.

We also have a 92 Toyota FJ80 and all Ive ever heard for it is OME stuff....allthough its staying stock and probably sold soon.

oh wel excuuuuuuuse me. Since you are a salty off roader I HIGHLY suggest a daystar spacer kit, some 20" wheels and low pro tires. It has been working perfectly in Colorado for exactly 6 months and 2 days. Hope this helpe:rockthrow:

You could just go back 6 months on the thread and ask "Joe Schmo" how Joe's lift has been performing?!?!? There are a lot of people on here that take pictures, turn around and wheel the sh*t out of their 4Runner.

I agree with the op to a point. Lots of pics, but not a lot of long term reviews of these systems. On my jeeps, I never bought a kit, always built my own based on my needs and different component characteristics. I'm thinking the same here, Bilstein 6000 fronts, 5100 rears, SAW rear coils and TC UCA seems to fit the bill of on/off road ride/reliability while covering all the bases for mild lift. Kits always seem to take a shortcut somewhere.

Reading through an entire build and looking at all of the photos and changes they have made to where they are now says a lot.

When looking through builds, I noticed several people upgraded two to three times to get where they are. I just went all the way and bypassed spending excessive money to get where I want. Again, it is because I went through multiple builds, researched various manufacturers and so on.

I have good past experience but not with iFS, other that cutting it out. Doing your research then asking questions makes the info you receive more valuable for what you are trying to achieve.

I just went from bilstein 5100all around/ fr. @1.75 /stock springs all around.
BFG KO2s 265/ C 's. to Saw rear coils. /fr @ 1.75.

IMO I really liked the way it handled before going to saw coils. I just did not like
the front being a bit taller.

Maybe b/c I don't have any weight in the back or maybe they messed up a shock

during the installation ( long story). Before changing tbe coils, the truck felt very
stable/planted when going through bumps, but now I noticed that the rear bounces a bit more. kinda reminds me of a bronco we used ti have. I guess i should have gone with a spacer instead since I don't plan on adding too much weight.
