Another Problem... Power Steering leak

I searched and couldn't find anything. I'm leaking fluid out of the crank on the power steering pump, alot. I'm losing a drop every second in fact. I drove to school nearly no fluid. I drove home with no fluid at all. I flushed it today and used a bottle of Lucas stop leak as well as a gallon of ATF type 3 Dex. I've gotten all the air out of the line now. The leak is still going. I've driven it around town for 20 minutes, and I sat in my driveway turning the wheel back and forth for another 15. Do I have to drive it for like an hour straight, or is better to let it sit over night for the leak to stop?

Dont ever use stop leak, all it does is fill up the hole with debris from the stop leak and contaminates the fluid. To fix the leak replace the pump or rack depending where the leak is.

Got any pics? Is it leaking at the lines or out of the pump itself?Any whining from the pump?

You may need a used PS pump and rack or refurbished. I have seen a P/S pump on a Camry seize and blow out all the fluid through the pump shaft as well as through both sides of the rack.

It's coming out of the shaft on the PS pump, alot. It also appears to be leaking, not as much, out of the boot on the driver's side of the rack.

It only makes noise when it's low on fluid.
 
If you are sourcing parts start calling the scrap yards in chula vista. A pick n pull may let you have the rack dirt dirt cheap if you pull it yourself. Most yards will not bother to remove the rack before crushing the Car.
 
If it is the P/S pump seal, you may be able to replace it. But as on the aformentioned Camry in my previous post, the shaft had so much play that I could spin it 360 degrees with little to no resistance. The mechanic, due to time restraints for me back then, said the bearing was toast, and we put a used pump in there. It worked for another 38,000 miles until I sold the car.

I think they make a seal kit for the rack. It is not hard to pull the inner and outer tie rods. Getting the rack seal out may be another story.
 
I just finished this job, mine was leaking out the sides of the rack so much that my end boots were filled with fluid and would slosh around if you squeezed them. I thought it was leaking up top too off the rack but traced it back and it ended up being just when I was putting fluid in it was spilling out.

I looked at new seal kits and the FSM to see how to do it and for the work involved it was cheaper/easier to just replace it for me. It got so bad I couldn't even drive it since it was dumping fluid so fast.

if it is your rack, chances are you will want to replace it. I picked one up used for under 150 and got new tie rod ends and so far so good. not going through fluid anymore.

Well I got this figured out. I consider myself a power steering expert now.

In order to install it, I had to take everything apart




Where the seal/bearing goes.


Now she isn't leaking no more.

Nice, I'm going to have to take a look at mine. I believe I have a super small leak.

And what's this talk of another forum?!
 
Alright. Now I need to figure out why it's leaking out of the rack.

It's leaking out of the Driver side boot on the steering rack itself. There's a hole in the boot too.

Any ideas?
 
I hope you throw some cardboard under the ride everyday in the school parking lot. Otherwise I would think some of the budding environmentalists would be hounding you all day.

Nice bumper BTW. Your rig Connor is coming along nicely.
