Kinda like a condom:

Rather have it and not need, then need it, and not have it.

Go with the 100'. Yeah, you might never use all 100' of it, but it'll beat that ONE time when you say, "Damn, I wish I had more winch rope......."

Yea I have been there. One time this dude had me hook my winch up to his truck and he drove into a lake.....ran out of winch rope before he could completely destroy his vehicle.

get as much as you can fit on the drum.
 
I have 75' and everytime I have needed to use I end up with less than 10 wraps on the drum. You should go no lower than 5 wraps. When I upgrade it will for sure be 100'

I'm not a PNW'er but I toss in my opinion. Go with the 100'. Another option is to get an extension. Your winch does lose strength as the amount of wraps increases on the drum. Also I know that the 5/16" will handle 14,500# but I would go with 3/8". Synthetic ropes do breakdown over time from exposure the the UVs. This will give you more safety margin. Also cover the rope when not in use.
 
im not running synthetic line, i have steel on both of my 9.5ti's but they both have 125' on them. and there has been several times when i needed extensions. so i will never go less than 100. you also gotta think, just cause your never more than 20' from a tree, doesnt mean thats the tree you want to use to winch too/from... what if you need to use a snatch block to change direction or to double up on the pull... more is always better in this case.

yeah i stuck this on the back burner as the line that i need is too much coin right now, i am going with the 100ft line after the suggestions in this thread, it's just gutting me to spend more on the line than i did on the winch itself, haha..

another maybe or maybe not stupid question is what's the difference between an extension or the synth line and static climbing ropes? from my understanding both are same construction and low stretch and are made to have the same sort of load put on them (non-dynamic load or static)
the 1/2" climbing rope rated at 11,000lbs of static force is only .76 cents a foot and would be much much cheaper than what else is offered out there, is this one of those things where one industry borrows from another and marks up the items or are they really that different? who here really knows about winch lines and climbing ropes?
 
They are two completely different ropes. A climbing static line still has some stretch and is no where near as strong.

Do some searching and find some (bulk by the foot) Tech-12/Technora Samson-The Strongest Name in Rope, TECH-12 (this is what I prefer) or Amsteel Blue/Dyneema Samson-The Strongest Name in Rope, AMSTEEL-BLUE (which is what most winch line is). Then weave your own thimbles in. "Eye Splice for Class 2, 12-Strand Ropes" Samson: The Strongest Name in Rope, Utility Products

This can be less expensive and is easy to do.
 
Totally different. Do not use climbing rope! It's not made to withstand the use and or elements like winch ropes. And most synthetic winch ropes are rated to like 19000-24000lbs much much stronger. Sure if it was an emergency and all I had was climbing rope I'd use it, but that would probably be the last time I used that climbing rope. Climbing ropes are made to withstand loads or people and gear, not trucks and gear -are they rated for it? yes, would I use it for that? no, not unless it was a last resort. Climbing ropes also have a "shelf life" and I have seen them fail under small loads. I'll post up some pics of one of my old climbing ropes that failed on a training for our SAR team -if a truck was being towed/winched with it it could of been much worse
 
Great info in here! If one were to buy 100ft of bulk line as linked above, how do you attach the ends? I have zero experience with winches, but I now have a winch with 21 year old steel cable on the drum, and have been thinking about replacing with synthetic. Is there a good link where I can read up on this stuff?

ummmm that's what i mean Dyneema and spectra was born from the climbing community, i've been using that stuff for over 10 years for my climbing anchor and slings, albeit a smaller diameter and from what i can gather there are only a few types of dyneema and the real difference is in the coatings, not arguing here, just trying to get to the bottom of this as $0.76/ft is much much more affordable......

I spliced a large eye around my drum. If completely unwound, it would hold the full weight of the rig without pulling off.
 
if it was an option, id have 200' of cable on my winch.
you can always run a snatch block to eat of some wraps, if you needed the extra pulling power.

not to mention, if you ever have to pull yourself BACKWARDS, it will use up that 100' in a HURRY.
