Hi everyone.
I'm the proud owner of a '99 4Runner with 173k. New battery, new starter contacts, new plugs, new MAF.
Today, I experienced the "stall under heavy load" and resulting code 1300 (Ignitor Circuit malfunction) for the third, and most final time. In the past year, this happened twice: Both times on hot days, AC cranking, either parked or going pretty slow. Engine dies. I re-start, and it usually starts back up after a few rounds of spattering. After that, business as normal.
Today, same thing. Except, it wouldn't start back up. While waiting for the tow truck (suspecting the fuel pump as this point), I keep trying to start the truck, without any luck. It cranks fine, and seems to get a little bit of fuel every time for two little "burps", but then goes back to idling dry.
After a while, a few cops show up, and block the lane I'm currently occupying, so I feel brave enough to fiddle under the hood a little. I read about lose grounds, couldn't find any though. Then I read something about the EFI relay, so I pulled it (that thing was piping hot, bestowed it with some "abracadabra" for about 10 seconds, plugged it back in, and, voila. Started back up.
According to this and other forums, I share the same problem that many others face, yet has mostly gone un-daignosed. But I'm still holding out hope that someone might have an answer, especially, since pulling the EFI relay seemed to have fixed it at least momentarily, it might be enough of a clue for someone much wider than me.
