Any hard specs on offroad bumpers?

Hi All.

This is my first post here, but I have been reading posts eagerly for a while now.

Let me introduce myself: I just bought a 2015 Trail. I also own a Quadvan Ford E350 with a Buckstop bumper and previously owned an '05 Taco with the ARB bumper. I have been very happy with both of those. The van was custom built. The Tacoma, I added OME 885 coils and an extra leaf from Deaver once I got the bumper. On the 4Runner, I'd like to leave the suspension stock for the moment, so I'm looking to save as much weight as possible on the bumper. I may not even get a winch. I want it for animal strike protection, having once experienced a deer strike in a friend's Isuzu, which was totaled in the process.

Which is why I'm going to opt for three hoops, even though they look pretty ugly on the 5th Gen bumpers I have seen.

I liked the ARB on my Tacoma, but it was pretty heavy. It also looks like it sticks out further than the others. Shrockworks almost had me, but then I started to read the many posts here on their long lead times and not-always-great service, so I began to look at other options. Demello looks to be making one out of aluminum, which intrigues me. I already called Aluminess, but they are not planning to make anything for 5th Gen 4Runners.

Does anybody here know what the lightest 3-hoop bumpers are, as well as the shortest, in terms of front protrusion? If Shrockworks came in first in both of those categories, I could possibly wait, but I was a bit put off by some of the posts here.

Also found this little gem currently on page 3 of the 5th gen forums Front Bumpers for 5th Gens, i guess it was too hard to click through the first 3 pages of our forum, although you are brand new and may not have located those buttons yet.

the stickies at the top of the 5th gen forum page are a great asset to locate many things that have already been organized for you. please search first next time, as many questions like yours have already been answered.

I just have been searching exact word strings and, oddly enough, did not initially find the post you just pasted in. As someone who has moderated Internet BBS's and boards since the early '90s, I'm familiar with being frustrated when it appears that people don't search before they ask. I assure you, I have been searching for days.

That post you refer to does answer some of my questions, although not all, weight and dimension-wise. I have been on the manufacturers sites, as well, and will continue to do so, If I can contribute any information to the sticky post, I'll do it.

most all of those manufactures listed in the thread will be helpful answering any questions you have. email or call them and they can help you, and even check out some build threads in here and ask the owner about what they think of their bumper. I know [MENTION=106242]Miguelon[/MENTION] has the shrockworks, i believe [MENTION=48772]Jesse1983[/MENTION] has the ARB, and many like [MENTION=105481]3wbdriver[/MENTION] and [MENTION=107119]2014 Warthog[/MENTION] (his build thread even rumors that he may be making additions to the SSS bumper and going his own direction) have the southern style speed slimline bumper. build threads and signatures are your friend.

It's good to be back in the Toyota fold. My first vehicle was a lifted Jeep Wagoneer, and that thing took to some amazing places. My first new vehicle was the 05 Tacoma and I really have missed it. Love the Quadvan, but it's heavy. Great to camp in, but not nimble. Anyway, glad to be with Toyota people. I'm going to go obsess about a front bumper. I want something light that doesn't protrude too much and soon. Maybe I'm being too demanding. Emailed Demello and hope to hear back from them on Monday.

I was having a tough time deciding between the bud built bumper and shrockworks, but ultimately went with shrockworks for the fact I wanted their sliders too and just assumed order it all together. Happy I did. Worth the wait, and the weight.

The best way to get the weight will be to contact the manufacturers. I doubt many of the people here weighed their bumper prior to install, or remember the shipping weight. That being said, I think all bumpers are heavy enough to sag the front a little.

I agree! I am so very happy with Shrockworks and thankful I decided to be patient. It have paid off.....I have damn near abused their bumper, sliders and skid plates. THey have held up like a champ.

On the search stuff, it sucks, either use the alternate search link or personally I just put "5th gen" in front of my search terms which usually works great for me. Don't take it personally, good people around here.

What I'm surprised is that no one has said much that putting any of the three hoop steel bumpers on your truck with factory springs is going to make it ride like crap. Maybe if demello comes out with aluminum, but that could be awhile.

I think you're looking for a 4x4labs bumper. Look at FactoryRide's build thread, he has one with hoops. Bimrunner has one without. It's low profile, and appears to be light weight.

I could have sworn I read somewhere that it was actually the heaviest.

Edit. I did not realize that he completed the details of his list and included weights, that's fantastic. And it does appear to be in the lighter side (without hoops).

1. People telling others to search
2. People who complain about the people telling others to search

Know what I found? The people telling others to search actually have answered questions in the past and been very helpful. The people who complain about the people telling others to search? Very few have ever answered a question with a link or a fact. Only opinion. Just sayin'.

But this thread has pushed his very useful thread further down the list when searching. If I had made a list like this I personally would be upset that people aren't finding it and taking advantage of it. It would be like all my hard work was for nothing. That thread does pop up if you search for 5th gen front bumpers, so it really would not have taken endless research to find.

Most people who ask posters to search do so because they know it's not hard to find. The more difficult questions tend to get actual answers. There has to be some give and take, and you have to make an attempt to help yourself. No one ever asks anyone to do something they haven't already done themselves.

I've been around a few years, was researching for at least 9 months before I joined. It really hasn't changed, I spend time in the 4th gen section as well, a slightly different vibe, but there is still a huge thread about consolidating and trying to make it more user friendly because of the scattered nature of the information. While trying to stop duplicate threads is somewhat of a waste in my opinion, I think there is value in the long term.

I'm guessing this post will end up on 1engineer's 'not helpful' chart. I'll likely never know considering I will be too lazy to search for it. Hopefully it shows up on page one when i happen to be looking tho.
