Any Hiccups with 2006 4Runners?

Hey Yall,

I just totaled my 2002 4Runner SR5 and am looking to buy another 4Runner. I have my sights set on a 2006 SR5 at a local carmax. My question is, are there any hiccups inherent to the 2006 models? My 2002 (made in 2001?) had a nasty "Strawberry Milkshake" trait that ended up being common to the model I had. The milkshake was made when your radiator started shedding parts into your transmission, thus ending up with you (or me) paying out several thousand dollars to get a new or rebuilt transmission. So, I guess I'm asking, is there anything like that common to the 2006s? Thanks in advance for any help you can render me!

To my knowledge the only "gotcha" with Gen 4's that's along the lines of the Gen 3 pink milkshake is the blown head gasket issue. Not specific to 2006's (more common with earlier Gen 4's, but the later models haven't been totally immune to the problem either) ... it's a V6 issue.

The main reoccurring issue with the 06-09 models is the brake calipers freezing. Have someone check the calipers prior to purchasing it so you're not on the hook right off the lot. Other than that they are bullet proof.

Is it a V6 or V8? If a V8 make sure the timing belt has been changed (should be done around 100k miles). V6 has timing chain which needn't be replaced. Make sure 4wd engages (assuming it's 4wd).

Thanks soooooo much yall! I reallllyy appreciate your time and knowledge! I think this one may have gotten away but, it's good to know that the Gen 4s have those particular problems that were mentioned. Yah....I'm only looking for a 4 x 4 and 6 cyl right now Jahmes; that's what my 2002 was so I'd be used to the gas consumption levels and such. Some of the issues I've read about on here are;

head gaskets- small percentage of v6 engines have this problem
4x4 actuators sticking/not working- common to all 4th gens, seems to affect those that don't use 4x4 often and to those who pretend their 4runner is a submarine.
Sunroof issues- mostly rattles but some leak as well, again, this can affect all 4th gens
Brake calipers- common to all 4th gens, this is probably one of the most common problems with the 4th gens, especially to those in the NE.

Of course, it's a gamble buying any vehicle in general but the chance of a vehicle having issues increases with mileage and age. In general I feel the 4th gens are still very reliable and solid compared to other vehicles of the age. I Just hit 145k with mine this week and it still feels a lot newer than that. Plenty of examples of 200k+ 4th gens on here as well.

Agree completely ... my '06 has 223K and, other than the head gasket issue, I've had no problems with it. Super stout vehicle and I don't intend to ever get sell it. Fully expect to get >400K out of it.
