That year of the GS is the best looking bike ever, IMO. I absolutely love the look of the squinty headlights. That's a cool pic.
It depends on the type of riding you plan to do. I think either bike is well suited for the twisty's. The BMW is going to be far more versatile and comfortable for touring, so if you plan to do long trips, I think the BMW outclasses the Hypermotard. I'm not a big BMW fan-boi (my bike is a Ducati Panigale), but if these are the only two bikes you're considering, and if you would like to do longer, multi-day trips, I say go with the BMW. I've ridden the new water cooled GS and found it to be very light feeling and fun. I've never ridden a Hypermotard though.
I personally want an adventure bike, and was looking at KTM's for their off road capabilities. I'm not a BMW fan and don't like the company much, nor do I care much for their bikes I've ridden. My dad has an RT that feels underpowered and the 1200GS is way too big to take off road on anything much harder than groomed fire trails. I had a chance to ride an 09 F800GS on some moderate fire trails and am now seriously considering that bike.

KTM is releasing an 800 next year. Can't wait to see it.
I really like the Triumph Tiger 800XC also.

Huh, didn't even realize there was a thread about motorcycles on here.
Just passed my MSF about 1.5 months ago, and then I happened across a great deal on a naked '06 SV650 so I went for it. Now I am in the process of buying some gear and getting some hours in!

I would love to own a bike, I've always dreamt about it. My dad rode motorcycles until mom nagged him enough to sell them. The only thing stopping me is fear of getting into an accident. My day job is dangerous enough. I wish I could stop being a ***** and just go buy a Harley

350XLR thumper, great for exploring a lot of terrain really fast, gotta love catching air on forest road waterbars! But for comfort, you can't beat the 4runner.
I also have a YZ250, which is hella fun on single track and off road in the desert, but it doesn't go fast enough on those flat desert roads. I keep trying to shift into a higher gear, but it doesn't exist.
I like to explore new areas on the thumper first, then followup with the 4runner.

As you might surmise from the sig, 2014 Ducati Streetfighter 848 parked in the garage... collecting huge amounts of dust. Career and two young kids = zero time for riding. Been thinking about selling it, but just can’t succumb to the misery of nothing in my garage. :fear:
Previous rides include... ’96 CBR600F3... ’88 Honda Hawk Race bike... ’97 CBR600F3... Yamaha R1... Kawasaki ZX6R... and a CBR600RR. Whew...
Really want to get back to doing some track days, just not sure I really want to use the SF for it. Plus I need to buy another set of full leathers... and that won’t be cheap. :wow2:

Right now I'm on an old Harley for just cruising HWY 1. Looking at an Enduro bike or something more off-road/Trail capable. Does anyone have any recommendations for a bike that is comfortable to ride highway for a few hours and then ride trails?

"Highway" like 4 lane, 90 mph? Or highway like 2 lane, 60 mph?
All the street legal enduros are good at the 2 lane and lower roads... some are better than others on the 4 lane... larger displacement is your friend for faster speeds, obviously.
And "trails" like single track AA enduro shit or trails like NF vertical signed roads?
2 strokes and smaller displacement off road oriented 4 strokes rule that.
There's too many individual variables to give you a blanket answer... you basically have to weigh the pros and cons and intended use and come up with the "closest fit".
Some good options depending on intended use would be any of KTMs street legal 4Ts, the Yamaha WR250R, Suzuki DRZ400S or DR650, Kawasaki KLR650. The WR250R is probably the only 250 class Jap 4T that I would try and run on the freeway and even it is easily overwhelmed at 80+ mph.

I test rode a used triumph tiger 1200 the other day. What a nice bike. I ride a Harley myself but looking for a foul weather bike that I don't mind getting a little dirty. Something I can still take out after they salt the roads up here in NY.
