Any suggestions for a replacement transmission

Yota lovers,

I am thinking about upgrading my transmission, but I am not certain what type to get. Can anyone tell me where I can find an automatic transmission that has a higher gear ratio, smoother linkage, and extremely durable. I am open to any suggestions and look forward to what you have to say.

There is no "heavy duty" transmissions for the 4Runner as fa as I am aware. But even if there was what would be the point. Also, the gear ratios on the tranny are not your problem. If you have oversized tires then what you'll eventually need to change the gearing in your differential ( for like 35" + tires ), but as far as changing the actual tranny goes thats kind of a crazy proposa.l haha

The issue is going to be controlling the transmission. The TCM talks with the PCM back and forth (IIRC its actually the same module on our vehicles, forgot what models/years we went seperate on) which means any new transmission you install wil either need a stand alone TCM (have no clue how that works to be honest) or a way to make it compatible.

That being said, I believe SkylineGTRRacer can chime in on this matter. I remember long ago he mentioned there was a company that rebuilds our trannies with heavier duty components and upgraded valve bodies for racing or something.

Would rebuilding be an optimal decision opposed to overhauling? Would a beefed up crankshaft be a possibility and if so where could I find one?

Unless you're rebuilding the engine for some serious boost or power, there's no need for a stronger crankshaft, did you mean flexplate? I'm a little unsure of what you mean.

Overhauling and rebuilding are going to be roughly the same. I believe most people use overhaul in this respect to mean partially rebuilding the unit (replacing only worn/out of spec parts) while rebuilding, they just throw new internals.

Honestly, I've had my 2003 4Runner for about 8 years and never had any problems, but commuting to work and numerous road trips I've tagged a total of 225,679 miles and at times it seems the transmission is slipping especially downshifting on a steep decline. So I was curious as to what resolution would benefit the large mission of pulling a transmission. I was also thinking of doing a 3" front 2.5" back suspension lift and getting 33" all-terrain tires, so another concern was getting a transmission to help carry my runner along with no lag.

i think everyone who runs that lift/tire combo has the stock tranny with minimal issues. A at least that I can think of. A few guys have regeared to accommodate larger tires. I know [MENTION=65653]aha2988[/MENTION] has 4.56's but I think he;s running 33's (correct me if i'm wrong)?

I think that with proper maintance you'll be fine. In 03, you shouldn't have the sealed tranny so if you've been keeping up with your drain and fills I don't think you'll need a fancy new tranny.
