Anyone changed transfer case output bearings?

I'm thinking I'll have to do this before long. I know the tcases stretch across different models/gens but I haven't seen anything specific to 3rd gen. It looks like I can drop the driveshaft, remove output flange and remove the rear cover. From what I've read, the speedo gear comes out and I can pull the output shaft which has the bearing pressed on..?
If the bearing is on the shaft and can be pulled out without dropping the case, it's something I can do....or is there more involved??

In a situation where I developed a wicked vibration on my way out to work about 70mi from home. Slid under the truck in the parking lot to discover my output flange has a ton of movement. I know I’ve gotta limp it home this afternoon. Question is do I swap the case this evening or can I get a bearing and do this in the truck without having to pull the skids and everything else? What’s the more time effective method?

The time effective is going to be swapping the transfer case if you have an extra one. The worst part for me was getting the top nuts for where the transfer case and transmission mate. I used a stubby flexhead ratcheting wrench.

Thanks, I do have an extra. Stupid expensive lesson of never operate off of someone else’s diagnosis. Have a whole 340 and case combined. Bummer about having to do that. It’s going to be a long night. Gotta figure out why it happened too.

Good luck! Here's a 2000 FSM in case you don't have anything to reference: Update your browser to use Google Drive, Docs, Sheets, Sites, Slides, and Forms - Google Drive Help Standard j-shift is a VF2A transfer case and multimode is VF3AM. They're different sections in the FSM.

I believe there's a staked nut there - might try tightening that first before you start pulling things, might take up the wear in the bearing (like a front wheel bearing adjustment)

there is a snap ring on the inside, you have to remove the housing for sure.

[MENTION=28464]eimkeith[/MENTION] was right. I figured it was either the staked nut or I was doing a t-case r&r as quickly as possible. Limped home drafting semis and I got lucky, no damage was done. Whoever rebuilt this (I got it from a junkyard but it’s definitely been rebuilt) didn’t stake the nut enough. I happened to have a fresh nut from doing the gear swaps so it has a new nut torqued, some blue thread lock, and well staked. Had it up to about 95mph the next day with no issues.
