Anyone else disappointed with the 2019 unveiling of the T4R

From someone who genuinely loves the current 4R, i'm glad they didnt' deviate much. At the same time, the refresh ain't happening for a few more years so is this really a surprise? I'm sure next year, they'll add some CF trim around the door handle and maybe update the location of the emblem and just stretch out a few more years until the refresh.

I posted some blue pictures in this thread (both Voodoo and Cavalry FJ's park next to each other and a clip of the 2019 4runner in Voodoo briefly put on the screen in Toyo's press conf reveal this AM in Chicago...

Don't go looking at the new Ranger Raptor then... both Ford and Chevy now have diesel engines in their compact truck segment.

I definitely agree about having too many "tech" implementations.
Hope their decision on choosing Voodoo Blue wasn't because they had excess paint sitting around. It just doesn't make sense to have gone with a very different special color each year (Inferno, Quicksand, Cement, Cavalry) then just go to a lighter shade of blue along with the other major changes like the FOX suspension, roof rack & JBL. But still no sunroof nor KDSS?!

That attitude chased me out of Austin, out of my "cool" cars I had before the 4Runner (which, even though it's supposedly such a POS is my favorite car I've ever owned), out of any place I start to notice it. I'm not "alternative" in any way, but the follower/FOMO/one-up-manship mentality is the worst. I like helpfulness, kindness, quirks, and things that just work as intended.
It's funny, I was visiting my folks in Texas last week and drove my dad's Porsche SUV. Used to love driving that thing, but after getting used to the 4Runner, it felt kinda flimsy and ostentatious. I owned a 1984 911 that had that same "hewn from steel" feeling as the 4Runner. I'm sure today's Civics are faster than that old thing was, but I'm also sure that EcoBoostDenaliRaptorRAMs are faster than our POS 4Runners. But they don't feel or look as good after dozens--nay, hundreds--of thousands of miles of abuse, they aren't as intuitive, and they play the mainstream game with huge makeovers too often, which means your model is outdated as soon as your neighbor buys his.
I was marginally annoyed with Toyota after the teaser, because I just bought a 2018 Pro a couple of months ago. I'm not a sheeple or a badge whore, I just got sick of trips to the off-road shop, trips to the alignment rack, and long days/nights in the driveway instead of on the river or in the mountains. I miss wrenching a lot, but I wanted a daily driver that didn't need any. And I stand by that choice, 2019 updates and POS badge whore overpriced paintjob and all. I'm a huge 4Runner fan, and continue to reply to people on the Tacoma forum who ask my honest opinion about the difference between the two. (Spoiler alert: the 3.5L V6 and 6-speed auto are AWFUL).

Audio and suspension are some of the easiest aftermarket mods to achieve.
Just give me a real locker front and rear, bigger motor, a diesel option... something that the average Joe can't just bolt on...
Lets be real.. everyone else is doing it.

I hate to admit this, but when I started driving in the 70's trucks were lucky to have an automatic transmission or AC and the radio was AM. We actually had to pay attention while driving, didn't have technology to drive for us. I bought my 4runner because it reminds me of a more simple time. Yes it has it's faults, but name me one car maker who builds a perfect vehicle. The problem I think is to many folks believe they have to have the latest and greatest in technology or they are not in the "cool crowd". You drive something that works, lasts way longer than most and will get back home almost every time, and the resale value is crazy. Isn't that enough?..

I'm not even digging the snorkel on the taco. I'm on base and despite seeing tacos everywhere I'm going to now see snorkels like giraffe heads over a tree line, all on trucks that have never experienced anything aside from pavement

Completely agree. Tech is just to fit in. The iPhone X? Piece of crap, but it's the latest and "greatest" so you have to buy one to fit in right?
I love the fact that the 4Runner has enough options and tech, while still maintaining that bullet proof engine that runs forever. The low cost of ownership, long lifespan, solid performance and looks are things that attract me to the 4Runner the most. I mean, people like to complain and all about this and that, but at the end of the day, it's still a solid truck. Roof rack can be replaced. FOX suspension is probably better than the bilsteins. JBL sound is better than the standard sound system. Red lettering on skid plate is a mod lots of people do so it's already done from the factory for you. I think the subtle updates are solid. Even though they aren't that subtle, as suspension and sound are big components.
I'd rather have peace of mind with a vehicle running a long time and having minimal problems few and far between rather than having that craziest latest tech and having lots more problems more often and the car running half or maybe even less than half as long as my Yota. That's just me though.
