Anyone else disappointed with the 2019 unveiling of the T4R

Yep, you missed something and only quoted the last sentence of my post.

LOL, I meant I might have missed any new off-road capable SUV on the market.
So far I don't see what other brands 4Runner failing behind to. I'm aware only of two frame based mid size SUV with low range in 40K price range - those are 4Runner and Wrangler. Not much competition IMHO. So I was wondering what other brands you are comparing 4Runner with.

I hate to admit this, but when I started driving in the 70's trucks were lucky to have an automatic transmission or AC and the radio was AM. We actually had to pay attention while driving, didn't have technology to drive for us. I bought my 4runner because it reminds me of a more simple time. Yes it has it's faults, but name me one car maker who builds a perfect vehicle. The problem I think is to many folks believe they have to have the latest and greatest in technology or they are not in the "cool crowd". You drive something that works, lasts way longer than most and will get back home almost every time, and the resale value is crazy. Isn't that enough?..

Nope, not enough for me. I need also off-road capability and enough space inside to carry all my stuff : )

I think the roof rack is perfect for drying my socks and underwear on the beach. And my swim shorts.

I'm not even digging the snorkel on the taco. I'm on base and despite seeing tacos everywhere I'm going to now see snorkels like giraffe heads over a tree line, all on trucks that have never experienced anything aside from pavement

Does the snorkel remind anyone else of War of the Worlds?

Or maybe some kind of heavy black eyebrow drawn on a white Tundra? One of these?

Whats everybody think the TRD Fox shocks are out of their aftermarket lineup? Such as Bilsteins being the 6112/5160. Im also wondering if the front shock setup is the exact same as the Tacoma Pros.

Any guess on msrp markup for 19's? My guess is high 40's which is just a guess.

I am far from a suspension expert.

Does anyone think the FoxShocks on the 4Runner are actually an upgrade? The reviews from the magazines/youtube etc on the Fox Shocks on the Tacoma and the way it rode/performance really wasn't that great.

Conversely everyone seemed to think the Bilsteins on the 4runner rode and performed pretty well. I know Bilstein supplies OEM shocks for Porsche, Audi, BMW, Mercedes, Corvette, Etc Etc As a company Bilstein is far from scrap liver.

So my question is.... Are the Fox Shocks noticably better (perform better) on road and off road than the Bilsteins and if so what makes them a better shock for the 4Runner?

Thanks

No easy answer to this question. In the real world, whats good for on road performance and comfort is typically bad for offroad performance and comfort, and then you have to factor in costs/profits/reliability/etc.

On paper, I think the OEM fox shocks are a good upgrade versus the bilsteins. However, once you figure in the pricing of those OEM fox shocks vs going aftermarket, they aren't a great upgrade (which is typically the case for any OEM performance part from any manufacture). Bigger shock body, better valving, etc, leads to increase reliability of your shock when going off the pavement, but it won't make a differenct to onroad performance.

If you are the type of toyota enthusiast who wants something more capable from the manufacture without going aftermarket and want a factory warrantee to back your parts, then the OEM Fox shocks are a better shock than the bilsteins.

IMHO, bilsteins are known to be a incredible value, but if you are buying a vehicle that is being hyped as a specialty vehicle, do you want to pay for "value" or "performance"... and unfortunately, this all comes down to brand name snobbery, because I'm sure bilsteins do make some high performing shocks...

The only way I would be ''Excited'' about a new 4Runner is if it DIDN'T have more techno crap! A solid axle and lockers would excite me.........a stronger engine would excite me......more actual offroad worthiness stock would excite me.....bumpers with better approach angles would excite me. Keep it a Truck and let the other folks buy Highlanders if they want Nannie State Gizmos!

Flame me if you like, and i do understand why so many are dissappointed...but personally, i am NOT.

Why...because the longer Toyota keeps the same structure, body style, power plant and trans, the longer my '14 remains the 'current' model 4Runner.

sure, id love to see them upgrade and install new tech, improve on the rig, and make it look however better they want to make it. sure it would be nice to see these 4wd rigs that we see in other markets get 'Mericanized and brought into our market, maybe one being a 4Runner or something close to it. But to be selfish about it, each time they give us a small update or adjustment to the current rig, it gives some of us ideas on what we can do to make our own rigs even more relevant.

see my pic to the left...a simple SR5, with some nice Cooper t/as (BFGs when the time comes), and a TRD-like facia thanks to plasti dip. I dont have a need to mod up the truck, but keeping the current structure lets me know Toyota feels that my own rig is still a package that can get the job done.

ok, Hate me if you like...:gun6:

...Unveiling Fell Kinda Flat?

https://www.motorauthority.com/news/1115220_2019-toyota-trd-pro-off-road-lineup-debuts-in-chicago

Looks like a few minor cosmetic upgrades
The Tacoma gets a snorkel and we're left with red letting on the skid.....
Is it just me or have we ALL been let down over the last 3 years. We're going from "trail" to"TRD OFF ROAD" and still no redesign

...I watched the 'live' unveiling of the Tacoma, Tundra, and 4Runner from the Chitown Auto Show...and the presenter tried to get the audience into participation and enthusiasm..but it really fell flat, leaving the guy with egg on his face....:sobbing:

...Maybe it was a tough-crowd in a tough room?...but it kinda felt like watching a standup comic fall flat on his face and die on stage cos no one was laughing at his jokes?...

...Cant say the 4Runner looked much different....which, I guess....is good for anyone with a newer model...cos yours won't look dated, right?!...:bravo:

so is the fox suspension going to have the same height and rake as the earlier ones with the bilsteins. im assuming so cause they say its one inch higher then reg 4R's so im assuming its the same

My guess is Toyota was in a contract with Bilstein to supply the shocks to this point. That contract was probably up, so they went back out to the companies to solicit offers on a new contract and Fox came back with the best balance of price (to Toyota) and the product Toyota wanted. Are the Fox better? Time will tell. But there is a ridiculous amount of advertising hype and emotion in the suspension world, so from a practical standpoint I wouldn’t say they are better just because they are Fox. But Toyota is also well aware of this hype and emotion and realizes they will be able to charge more (maybe a lot more) just because of the name Fox, regardless if they are actually “better.” The Bilstein TRD Pro setup (and the 6112/5160) are really nice shocks.

The foxes to me, felt better, having time in both of those vehicles.

But that's just going by "feel." These are basically the same specs as the billstein, just via Fox. I think Fox's make sense since the Fox's feel great on road, but as I've said need more work to tune off road (kings being the reverse).

Imagine the TRD Pro came stock with the OEM Kings?! Now that would be a statement and a 10,000 up charge!

King just doesn't do OEM shocks. And I think 99 percent of people would HATE how kings ride. They're progressive shocks and they ride stiff on road for the most part, but during high speed they're like butter.

Most people don't go off road and I think they'd hate how they feel.

Internal bypass.

That's really the big difference, plus they are mounted inverted so that seems it will cause some interesting damage potential in the rear for hard core trail use.

Should perform better overall, but nothing dramatic.
