Anyone ever retrofit steering wheel controls for stereo on our 3rd gens?

This may seem like a minor detail, but the favorite part of my 4runner is the killer system I put in it. I am in the process of 4 hand surgeries, carpel tunnel an trigger thumb, per hand. Consequently my finger strength and mobility has been sketchy at best for awhile now, and the tiny volume knob on my Kenwood touch screen sucks. I am just inquiring about doing something like retrofitting a control module, different vehicle steering wheel, something so we have steering controls for an aftermarket head unit.

I have option for integration for all that on the deck, but has anyone utilized it? Did a few searches and came up empty, but I never seem to have success. If I can obtain cup holders, garage door opener retrofit, lockers, an everything else it has now, this didn't seem impossible. :der:

I've seen generic strap controls you add to a steering wheel. Kind of depends on IR line of sight though, presuming it works with your system.

Not endorsing this or any other, just sharing to give an idea what I'm talking about...

Ive wondered about this myself. I was searching around at a 4th gen steering wheel swap, but decided against it because of any potential safety issues with swapping a different air bag. I havent come up with any other solutions that look good.

Not sure if this is helpful, but my wife's 2003 Sienna (which we don't own anymore) had what appeared to be an identical steering wheel to the 4Runner.
And it had factory audio controls.

I'm looking to do pretty much the same thing. I'm in a 2005 SR5, and buying a nice Kenwood head unit, and plan on getting the harness and control adapter for it. What I am hoping to do is just buy a complete 2005 Limited steering wheel for the salvage yard, and swapping. I'm hoping the wiring is all going to be there.
Has anyone successfully swapped up to a steering wheel with controls to control an aftermarket stereo?

What is a 2005 SRT? As in a Dodge? Either way you're posting in the 96-02 section so if this is a 4runner, you won't get much help
