Anyone familiar with '13 or '14 RAV4?

The wifey's cherry, low miles '10 CRV is probably going to get totalled by our ins co. She, ah, kinda took it for a swim through a flooded intersection Sunday. Ingested water, engine locked, etc etc.

Car shopping today, and I want to look at Toyotas too. Any words of wisdom on RAVs, or other Toyotas?

If it were up to me, I'd just replace the CRV, but I'm trying to take my own oft-given advice about the wife picking her car.

Rav4 is great but depending maybe look at the 2014 Forester if there are any on the lot. Wasnt even on the books when the lady was looking and just happened to stop in the dealership and took it for a drive and loved it. But they keep selling so quickly off the lot that she had to wait for it to be shipped overseas because in such high demand. Just at least give them a chance. With the sunroof that basically makes it a convertible and the brilliant eyesight technology fulltime awd with great mpg its a good car. And it has been remodeled so as to not look as...lesbian subaru like.

Lolol lesbian subaru. I think it looks pretty nice, better than the rav-4. I forgot what car i sat in and played around with at the dealership showroom but i think it was a rav4.. the upgraded packages have a LOT of creature comforts, but the sizing inside is fairly comfortable, can't comment on the its driving as i havent test drove it yet.

The new highlanders that everyone likes to recommend vs the 4runner for the average lady of the household is not more comfortable IMO, and although has good engine sound dampening, the road noise is fairly loud (probably fixed with better tires).

I'm assuming you arent looking at sedans?

I might be alone on this one Philsey, but I think the new RAV4 looks a ton better than the new CRV. I never actually test drove the new RAV4, but the interior fit and finish is not too shabby at all! They sure have come along way since I last sat in one years ago. I spent a good 15-30 minutes playing around in one at the car show a few months back. IMO a RAV4 would be a perfect replacement for the CRV since they are both roughly about the same size and would not be a huge change for your wife to drive. What does your wife think about it?

My wife drives a '12 CRV and she loves it. The new RAV's were not out when we bought the CRV. I think we would of picked the CRV anyway.

This generation RAV4 is very similar to the CRV. No barn door rear gate, no V6 option, etc. Basically Toyota followed Honda on this part.

Both are great cars. Basically it comes down to looks!

That HAD been the plan, but she drove/liked the Civic coupe.
Actually, she reeaaaaallllyy liked the canary yellow S2000 convert at the Honda store, 'til I told her it was a manual trans.

Yah, I'm really a fan of the CRV - it's just a great, great product. You can't swing a dead cat around here without hitting one. I wouldn't even look at anything else if it were up to me, but I'm trying very hard to make this her choice. I AM restricting where we shop (Honda, Toyota, and now Subie).

Are there pictures of it "Swimming"? I/We have to see it.

I wish it was "honey will you pick me out a car?" Surprisingly, she is thinking she doesn't need something as large as her CRV.

I came to the realization yesterday that her CRV is/was worth more than I thought. So now I'm slowing this down as I'm not certain it'll be totalled. Car problems are such a pita.

In regards to the prius I would say there are several other options with just as good if not better mpg. I mean legitimately I would say the VW jetta TDI. But if you want to stay with Honda I don't see a problem with the civic hybrids that get amazing gas mileage as well. If you WANT to go domestic you could always go for the Ford Fusion Hybrid which is a fantastic car. I dont know, dont get me wrong, but it just seems the Prius is a go to car for great gas mileage when the reality is there are several other models out there that get similar mileage without sacrificing the looks. . . . and don't even get me started on the new Prius models. .those these got garbage reviews. Anyways hope it helps a little and I second posting the pictures. Good luck on your shoe shopping with the lady!

But on a more serious note, if she feels she does not need a larger vehicle like a CRV/RAV4 and you already have the runner, maybe a smaller sized sedan/hatchback might not be such a bad idea? Honda Fit seem to be "cute" chick cars, at least that's what my wife says. Personally, I would only get a Prius if I was actually going to get my money's worth out of it, ie. if i drive a ton of miles on a daily basis.

Domestic = no, hell no.
VW = no, and hell no. Hondas and Toyotas are just too good to stray away from. I will look at Subie, but she won't like them.

Please define "garbage reviews" - I need to know. We drove a Prius this afternoon. Certainly different, odd perhaps. Can't say I was wowed. Also not so sure I'm a fan of hybrids in general. Please no hybrid debates!

Yeh, it may come down to that. Drove a RAV today, nice vehicle. She liked the Civic coupe.

I'd take a RAV4. I love the looks of the new one. I find the new CR-V ugly (well all of them, actually) and unattractive. The new RAV4 is nice even without a V6, the 4 cylinder pulls nicely. The ride is very controlled and comfy, with a little bit of sport thrown in. I test drove a XLE about 2 weeks ago and really liked it.

Regardless of the poor photo, that water was knee deep (I know) when I got there, and was receeding by then. It was deep enough to have entered the cabin, as the front and rear footwells are squishy.

Had she been creeping through, I think she'd have been fine, but I have a pretty strong suspicion she wasn't. There were several vehicles stalled as well.

American Family just called - totalled it. I'll meet the adjuster this afternoon with the title and get a check for $22,400, which I'm very OK with. PLUS, they'll pay me for tax, ttl, and lic on the new car. Probably another $1400. PLUS he's going to recalculate the $22500 to add the value of the HID retrofit I had done on it. I'm happy, they were very fair IMO.

Now .... to see if I can get Honey-Baby to make a decision.

I believe the reviews were Car&Driver and Consumers Report about the Prius C and Prius "V"? The things had bad build quality and interior wise and outer components weren't very well built or put together. But yes good luck on the shopping glad the Insurance company cooperated so well, and good luck with the search! As for the Subaru trust me, my lady wouldn't even bat an eye at it, but I got her inside of it and she loved how it felt so open all the gadgets and specifically out here(Midwest) the full time AWD getting up to 30+ mpg on the highway! You said up to the door sills so I just went along the bottom of the door sills to see about where it would be in the engine bay... that was a little low. I'm 6'-6' 1" tall and knee deep still seems a little low to hydro lock an engine.

Well, we spent the afternoon driving the Accord Coupe and the Altima Coupe, which the Accord won --- sorta.

After a buzz through the Lexus lot, she is smitten, me not so much. Drove (test) this home. I keep promising her this is her choice, dammit. Leaving for a long weekend tomorrow, maybe it'll be sold when we get back.

So much for the effin RAV.
