Good thread so far. I perceive by the tone of the writing that the leaders are better than the followers. I disagree.

I was going to lift my 2013 TE 4Runner; but, after reading on this site about the compromises I decided to leave it as is. It is very trail worthy in stock form. Yes, I've bashed my thin armor; but, no major problems so far.

I like the look of the rims; so, I kept them. I did swap out the tires for DuraTrac stock sized tires. If that makes me a follower of the leaders; so what.

In 21 months of owning this 4Runner, I've put 46k miles and about 3k miles of off road on it. I hope to hit 1,000,000 miles on it in the next 30 years.

In other words what do you think these threads are for? I use owner forums to learn about what others have done & decide if I want to do it or not. It would be ridiculous for every owner of a 4Runner to test everything they want on their own vehicle when they can see what works or not on here.

So, to the leaders, keep up the good work. To the followers, good for you too. If I read into this thread the tone of setting one of the two above the other and that was not the intention, sorry. If that tone was intended, duh - this is a forum.

Well I might as well put in my 2 cents with regards to this:

I've owned:

- slammed to the ground MK2 Jetta
- 2001 BMW 325XI lowered OEM +
- Right Hand Drive FJ80
- 100 series Land Cruiser
- 2012 GTI.
Now: 2014 Trail Edition.

Every single one of those vehicles you could call a follower and every single one of them looked great and in my opinion and feedback "classy" or "appropriate" with enhanced ability in each proper department that the vehicle was designed for resulting in a gap in my wallet ($5000-$20000) and that's ok. Yes, I have GOBI on order and I just installed kountersteers because its been proven that it works and it looks great for the money....ah money.

Here's my point: Unless you are a master fabricator, got a shop/tools with all bells and whistles and unlimited amount of time and money you will most likely be a follower because guess what...95% of it has been done already by someone else. I don't have that time and commitment because I have to and want to take care of my family, house, friends, myself go on trips (on a plane) etc. etc. 4Runner is just a part of the whole spectrum and i'm not willing to spend all my efforts/finances to "look different" so I can get some kind of personal satisfaction or approval from people out of which 50% are clueless about vehicles period...nevermind a 4Runner lol. It looks great and still different from 90% of unmodded vehicles.

You need none of these things to make your 4Runner unique. Paint all your wheels blue and grey. Glue a bunch of stuff to your hood. Be the first to install curb feelers on a 5th gen. That would make it unique right? I am being facetious but you get my point. You probably wouldn't like it and neither would anyone else. If you go back and re read the post you will see that I said no matter what we do we will be criticized. Make it the same - wrong. Make it totally different - wrong again. That's just normal. The previous poster talking about his Audi wheels hit upon an important concept and so did a few others. To paraphrase it would read "Make it a unique fish in a small pond." That is, very few people (going back to my example) in any one town in North America will have modded their 4Runner with a 2" lift, black countersteers and a gobi rack lol. You would definitely be unique in your pond, so to speak. Now, if every one of us here at the forum lived in the same town you would have to do some serious mods to stand out!

solid work everyone.....glad this thread took off. What i gained from it are listed as follows

-16's wont fit, my mistake my tacoma can wear them.
-you guys must have long beards for being so wise.
-you also all like to poke eachother too much
-im glad you all own your own 4runners and dont have to share one.

I meant nothing, especially no disrespect, to anyone with my post. I was just stating observations that this forum and modding vehicles is no different than any other facet of life. There's a guy who does something first, then more people do it, then a few change it up a bit and so on. Nobody is any better or worse than anyone else. Why? Because the guy who did something first in one instance surely was following someone else in another portion of his life. Lastly, remember "Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery."

Exactly. By simply driving a 4x4 that's not the de rigueur fullsize pickup, Suburban or Tahoe I (and any other male living in Texas) am being unique. This echos [MENTION=66316]1engineer[/MENTION] saying we are all pretty much unique fish in our local pond, but on this forum we can probably find someone else (or six other someones) with a similar 4Runner.

Now to add something related to the thread: OP can you please search next time? There have been many threads about 16" wheels on this forum. Don't shoot me for it either, I'm just helping you out because I don't want someone else to tell you to search. (all in good humor)

These 4Runners aren't like Jeeps. There aren't as many parts available as there are for Jeeps, so a lot of us are going to have the same shit on them. Now on the other hand, there are plenty of tacky parts out there to make one's 4Runner their own. I must say, I'm glad that I haven't seen many going that route on this forum. That's my conclusion.

Back to the original post. 16" wheels will not fit due to the size of the brake rotor.
