So this happened last weekend

Thinking about putting a ford 9in in the rear however the pinion horizontal offset has me a bit worried.

What happened? About ten years ago I remember seeing a stock height 3rd gen with a Ford 9 inch installed underneath. All factory mounts replicated. Not sure where the info is anymore, but I think it was from the glory days of Yotatech.

I have a ford 8.8 in my yj now. Disc brakes and factory limited slip are great! Pairs well the the GW Dana 44 in front.

Ford 8.8 31 spline might be cheaper and more available. There’s plenty of Ford Explorers in wrecking yards. The 28 spline is more common but that’s not the one you want.

The 3rd member bottom studs snapped and bent the housing creating a half inch gap. Had to trail repair with silicone tire plugs and duct tape. Also snapped a front hub too.

Looking for some gong to hold up to the 37s and duel cases

2nd option would be 14 bolt but I just don’t want the weight

Yikes! These 8's are pretty strong, I'd replace the studs with grade 8 bolts & see how it holds up.

a 9 inch is strong if you get the right one, but the pinion is stupid low. with dual cases, the D-line angle might be pretty severe depending on your wheelbase.

a 14b wouldn't be the only other option. a rear 60 is plenty strong and has several inches more ground clearance than the 14b. they should also be pretty cheap at junk yards. the down side is you cant get matching gearing. but, that would just be a stepping stone to a matching front 60.

that said, another Toyota rear might just be the answer. tons of people have ran them with larger than 37's without those issues. you might have just been unlucky with that one.

There's a simple mod where you install some 12.9 button head screws into the axle housing so they stick out like studs. This gives you a stronger fastener and prevents it from being able to pull out. I wonder if this would help a failure mode like this?

That.

Here's what I did to mine to prevent that from happening to mine.

I'm positive that made the diff way stronger. Strong enough to hold up to dual cases and 37's? I'll let you know soon.

how about an FF 9.5 from FZJ80 (94-96). full float with factory disc brakes and can find one with e locker. the 9 inch pinion is low compared to 3rd gen t4r would be a concern also the road manners and noise. it is really strong and bolt on compared to the amount of modifications to fit a 9inch ford.

I have been thinking about a 9" from currie as well for my leaf sprig swap I plan on doing but was curious how to keep the rear speed sensor / ABS sensor.

I wouldn't need them if the front abs sensors could operate the speedo and odometer though.

If you are willing to give up ABS, this is fairly easy. Use a Tacoma speedo drive on the back of your transfer case to drive the gauge cluster and ECU.

They can! [emoji1360]

This is a great solution, but he wouldn't even need to do this if he still has the front ABS sensors. ABS won't work, but the speedo/ODO will [emoji1598]

Does this mod work on a 1996? Seems that kinda he first year 3.4 in the 4Runner didn’t have some of the stuff available yet.

My abs doesn’t work as it is and i hate abs off road anyways. This has made me more hopeful that I can do my swap sometime soon

I was able to hammer the bent housing flange flatish. Ordered some m10 1.5 30mm button head bolts. Going to drill and tap housing. Should be a lot more beef aslong as it doesn’t leak. Should get me by until I do one tons front and rear
