Anyone know how to fix/connect the glove box shock?

Does anyone know how to connect or fix the glove box shock? My shock is disconnected, so the glove box keeps dropping down.

I opened it up and pulled the shock, and it seems like it still works.

It's a tricky little pita but there is a post to attach the shock to... You need to drop the glovebox all the way down to access the post. Pinch it in on the ends and you should be good to go.

What end is off??? The end that attaches to the glovebox or the end you can't see????

the bottom part is a screw. the top part A goes to B. i dropped my glove box in order to get pics. its also easier if you drop it to reattach it. all you do to drop it is squeeze the sides.

anything else/ a different view let me know.

Thank you for the photos. I took my 4runner in for service and on the way home I notice my glove box simply fell open and seemed really heavy. I had a look today and found that it was detached at the top of the shock where it attaches to the small stud (connection "B" in the photos).

I tried to re-install the upper shock after properly removing the screw from the lower area of the shock but it kept coming off at the top. The tabs were bent inward and they would not retain the shock even with the tabs temporarily catching as the tabs would simply bend inward when the shock was screwed back into the glove box. In your photo your tabs look similar, slightly bend inward only mine no longer have any rigidity to hold the shock.

The bad part is I have done the cabin air filter myself and had a new one in the garage but let them install one while paying for the 100k checkup. I should have just done it myself.

That top peg seems to be a weak point. As you can see mine wouldn't hold the top hole of the glove box damper either. Detach the damper from the glove box. Put the damper in place on the peg and run a 1/2" screw with a washer through. It's very easy, very soft plastic, so no drill needed. Once your damper is in place you can screw the other side on the glovebox and pop the box back in place. I had a great pic of what I did but lost it. Here's an exciting pic of the broken peg. Bad design IMO.

P.S. Can anyone identify the white electrical clip above the peg? It has four female pin things. I suppose it's for an option I don't have in a SR5 but I was wondering.

Easy. Just use a 3/16 e-clip in the tiny open space between

the damper arm and the plastic prong sticking out of dash. Mount the e-clip with your fingers and then use a needle nose pliers to squeeze it on. Be careful to use one end of the pliers's pointed jaw on the clip and the other pointed jaw on either side of the slot in the plastic prong. This mounts it permanently. If you want to mount it temporarily use a small woodman clip and just stick it in the slot in the plastic prong. Make sure not to force it. The woodman clip, which looks like a half moon, should fit in snugly. Put some sticky putty on both sides of the woodman clip to make sure it does not dislodge. This method is very easy. Harbor Freight has all these clips. A c-clip will also work but then you have to buy another tool to put in the holes of the c-clip.:violin:

Glove box won't open unless..

Hi gang,
I cleaned out my cabin air filter. Wow it was gross. Now, the glove box wont' open unless i push against it while open latch. Latch looks good, but glove box does not fit properly. Maybe glove box shock is not connected correctly? Any tips?

The damper has one hole at the piston end that screws into the glove box door but the other, larger part confusingly has two holes. IIRC, it needs to be attached through the one closest to the piston for proper operation.
