Anyone Regret Their Gobi on a DD?

I actually got the Rola rack as well recently. Mounted on the factory crossbars. Used it on a long road trip as well as off road. Worked very well and looked good too. Surprisingly very minimal if any added wind noise even up to 75 mph.
Off road it held 50 lbs of fuel bouncing and rocking back and forth for 4 days and never shifted or came loose at all (I checked it daily). Super easy to take back off after to store as well. Impressed for 125 USD.

But where will you put your Roof top tent if you don’t get a full steel rack???

The biggest downside to a steel rack is rust in my mind, it will happen it’s just a a matter of when. If gas mileage was important you probably wouldn’t choose a 4Runner as your DD.

I'd considered a rack, but decided that an aerodynamic ago box suits my needs better. I just put it on when I need it. Mine is a DD with maybe 1-2 trips per year where luggage goes on top. I use Thule crossbars when I'm getting plywood or lumber that's longer than I feel like having inside.

I’ll use a rack a bit more than that but not for RTT. The rago product to be released is intriguing because it provides the platform without the weight and I still is the factory rails. At $450 is more than buying the cross bars but with slightly more functionality.

I got rid of a Civic for the 4R, loss of MPG is irrelevant to me at this point. The fun out weighs the cost of admission (gas) in my case. Either way, it gets better MPG than my TJ.

Get one of these instead

Buy a 6" X 10', do more with it (weight, size, ramp loading) and it unhooks in about 60 seconds...

The one thing a roof rack will do is let you use it as a platform to photograph from, watch an event, etc.

Also, consider you roof height if you have or use a garage.

Mine is too low, would have to park outside, not happening.

No regrets -- its pretty handy for me. Mileage sucked anyway so whatever.
