Anyone swap their own dash?

Ive been looking online for guides or videos and I have come up short. I have removed alot of things on a 4runner but the dash is not one of them. It cant be that hard right? I just wish I had some idea of what I am getting in to. If anyone works a a dealer and can video the process or take some pictiures, it would be amazing. If any one has any links, please post.

I know I’ve seen rough write ups somewhere here in t4r. FYI it’s not for the faint of heart either. Supposedly steering wheel, some HVAC components, gauge cluster plus some other stuff all have to come out in order to get the dash out.

Keep on searching here in the forum, I KNOW I’ve seen at least 1 partial write up. If I had it I’d link it below. Just haven’t gotten to that project on mine yet so I haven’t completed my own research yet.

What if you remove the windshield? Would that make it any easier? Mine is cracked so I think it would be the best time to do it, . Please please let me know how it goes and take as many pictures or video as possible. Then you will be a hero! Are you getting the dash new? How much?

It can't be all that hard to do, I think the Tech at the dealer who did mine only took a couple of hours or less to do mine, but I sure he has done many of them so I would think it could be done in half a day or so for a novice at doing one.

You may have better luck searching for those that have done the AC evaporator R&R instead looking for just a heater core R&R, and seek their input/guidance, I know there's a couple of guys here who have taken on that horrible task!!

It's really easy and most of the bolts are same size. Lower the steering wheel and extend it far out, and it'll give you lots of room.

That’s the single positive thing I’ve ever seen said about a dash swap lol.
Are you saying removing steering wheel isn’t necessary?

OP I am planning on taking pics. Not going to do an entire detailed write up but I am going to put together a combo of the different threads I used, and fill in the blanks myself. Just won’t be for another month or so.

Also, I did purchase a new dash from an OEM wholesale online store. Dash was about $675, shipping was almost another $200. It hurts.

First link still works. Download, then look up instrument panel/meter/instrument panel sub assembly for the majority of the instructions.

There are some additional components that need to be R/R'd for the complete dash swap, haven't reviewed those instructions yet. That said, from the little bit I reviewed, I think this is actually a complete FSM file, just organized in an odd way if you want to flip page by page.

From a quick review, this seems like a usable tool.

If someone wanted to make it a MUCH more useful tool, you could reformat into a single PDF of all pages in order.......and share with everybody else.

Definitely not. Don't have to take off steering wheel. Take off the a pillar covers, gauge cluster, lower panels, unbolt and slide back center console. The shape of the dash is small, so it's possible to take it out by yourself.

That’s great. If that’s all, I can knock that out in 4 hours. Which means I can do the removal, seat removal, complete detail, backup camera install, and headunit microphone install ALL in one weekend.

Mainly for the op, I did this this afternoon. Took me an hour or so to pull everything out and a little longer to put it back. Not hard at all. And you don’t even need instructions. Very straightforward.

I need to take out the gauge cluster to replace some light bulbs. How can I do that?

This is what I found in the service manual. I don't know if I need to perform steps 1-10 or just 11-14.
