....I still like the license plate idea. As far as I know, U.S. license plates have all been the same size for the last 75 years. I think that's a really good guess because they did say the question applies to cars in this country. European plates are obviously much wider than ours.

If 75 years is your standard, it looks like the license plate doesn't make it. According to Wikipedia, license plates have been standardized for 54 years.

I think the question is flawed by using the word "Every." Of course it's not possible for every car to have the same thing... so it probably means the "average" car (with the exception of a few rarities) of every year for the past 70 years.

Wikipedia says that license plates were standardized less than 70 years ago, but I bet the "average" car was already using the same size used today. It was probably just a couple states that weren't following what all the rest were using.

Yeah, sorry...forgot to post the answer.

So the people who thought it was the license plate holes were correct. Apparently the distance between them has been the same on cars in this country for the longest time.
