Hi guys I don’t post much here but, I was wondering as my auto transmission is going out and looking for a replacement. Did you manual swap guys notice a good increase in power and torque? My friends manual seems like it has 30 more horsepower and torque compaired to my auto.
As a new a340f is about 2500 from Toyota and I could probably pull off a junkyard manual swap for 1500 or so I was just wondering if you guys noticed more power with the mainland. Long post thanks for your time

Drivability is definitely better, no more hunting for gears going up hills. 1st gear is lower and 2-5 are very close to gears 1-4 in the auto. I also gained about 2 mpg

The manual is just fun to drive

Had a 1998 Toyota 4runner Limited with a 3.4 V-6 and Automatic, found my 1994 22RE 5 speed and sold the 1998 because I prefer the 5 speed so much more. 4.10 gears on mine, was a middle of the road 1994 model, it is great to find the gear you want, when you want it.
Way better mileage, but I did drop two cylinders so that is apples to oranges.
Built up the 2.4 four with LCE Engineering parts and it moves with a 5 speed, the 3.4 was younger but always slower due to the transmission.
The Automatic was a great tow vehicle for my boat, and the 5 speed isn't that great for towing, that would be my only negative to a manual shift vs. an Automatic.
The 3.0 has the gas drinking of a V-8 and the power of a 4 cylinder with an auto. If you want to take on swapping the transmission, you should. Manuals are a dying breed, keep them alive.

If you decide to pull the trigger for manual swap don’t forget all the little shit like pedal brackets, and hydraulic lines, and hoses, and their brackets, interior panels for center console. All that shit adds up too. I’m sure there’s write ups galore.

That being said I went from 3.0 auto to 3.4 supercharged manual in my 2nd gen with factory 4.88’s... never regret it.

You could save up after the swap and rebuild the automatic transmission eventually. Then when the clutch goes out in 90,000 miles or whatever you can decide to go back or not. Just save all the old parts.

Obviously its not going to make 30 more hp when you swap the transmission but the ability to keep the engine in the power band ( or in this case torque band) makes it seem that way. I am not a big fan of the auto transmission in our 4runners. Its geared high and relies too much on the torque converter. It works fine for flat terrain and highways and is better for rock crawling but really does poorly in steep paved hilly roads. Which is what i drive on every day. So take where you drive it into account if you want to do the swap.

Thanks guys. The wife and I live in New England and travel a lot so there are always hills and I am a snowboarder as well so there are mountains in the mix. I have some thinking to do and have to talk with my mechanic. Thank you guys for the reply’s.

I have a feeling that my 2000 3rd gen auto transmission is going out too. What’s yours doing to make you think it’s going out?
