ATF flush. total capacity?

I'm intending to follow skjos's writeup on the ATF flush.

For those of you not familiar with it,

Dropping Pan And Flushing Transmission

Anyhow -- one point is unclear to me. He said if you can't differentiate in the white bucket between old and new fluid while draining through the coolant line, make sure to go through 16 quarts total. This is kind of odd to me, it'd be easier to know total capacity (not in a drain fill, but everything included -- torque converter/transmission/etc) - is there any number (estimate or actual) I could use?

16qt is about right. I bought 20qt (5 gallon case) and have about 4-5qt left.

As far as "flush" method, do you have any reason to drop the tranny pan? If not, I'd go straight to disconnecting the tranny hose that goes the radiator. That's the method I used. Fair warning, when you start the engine to let the ATF fluid drain, it comes out FAST. Don't let it run too long before shutting down and adding new fluid (I used 3-5 sec intervals).

I bought three gallons of Dex3 at advanced auto and did two drive and dumps. The last dump I added a magnefine inline trans filter and a trans cooler I got from a explorer in the junkyard.

This spring I will drain, drop the pan and change filter and clean the magnets, put my last gallon of oil in it and replace the inline filter one more time.

My trannys turn

Yup good advice, I've had a magnefine in place for about 55K, I also dropped pan/changed filter then along with bypassing factory cooler while installing hayden in front. I've got a 4k+ trip planned in a couple months out west so I've been doing lots of maintenance lately. Tranny is gonna get just a fluid flush this time along with a new magnefine. I'll cut the old one in half and post some pics later for everyone's review of mr. magnefine. On the flip side, tranny has performed flawlessly (fingers crossed) with nice firm but hard shifts. I really like the "power" ECT setting, mine is always on that.

Why not route the "send" line into an empty drain pan and have the "return" line continuously suck up new ATF? I think that would save a ton of time because you don't have to start/stop the engine every few seconds.

An automatic transmission doesn't have the capability to suck up new ATF. It would be nice if it worked like that.

If a Magnefine is installed make sure it is changed out at least every three years. It does work well.

Here's two videos people can use if they prefer videos over a write-up.
