Aussie Locker Question

So, I finally figured out why I don't hear any clicking sounds coming from my Aussie Locker anymore, because the thing crapped out on me, Ive had only for a little more than a year, and now its not engaging.

I will be doing a rear diff fluid change to see if there are any metal shavings or anything indicating why it broke so fast. ( I don't go wheeling to often, and when I do they are the easy-moderate trails)

Question is since its not engaging and the shop that I go to, to fix my cars is not available anytime soon, is there any danger of driving around a POSSIBLE broken Aussie locker? The 4Runner Is my Daily Driver so I just wanted to be sure of it. :horn:

Well to tell you the truth I hear nothing, I live in Canada where right now we have lots of snow in the ground what would it feel like slipping?

I started noticing it after one wheeling trip went home all normal, then a couple of days later , I noticed I didn't hear and more clicks during my turns and especially my u turns, went out offroading yesterday, and that's where I found out it wasn't engaging, only one wheel was spinning in the rear,
AND to top it off my CV broke in the front so that off-roading trip was no fun :doh::doh:

BUT as for now is it ok to be driving the 4runner?

If you're not clicking when you idle around corners, and you've seen one wheel spinning so you know you're definitely not locked, then maybe either the plates with teeth in the middle of the locker have stripped out or something is wedged between them keeping them open. If you don't have a bunch of metal chunks come falling out when you drain the oil I'd say you're probably ok to keep driving it until you get around to fixing it.

Please post pics when you do, because I'm curious.

I was wondering how long you have had it in your differential?. I have had mine for coming up on 50k miles with no problems out of it except every now and then I will hear a pop after I straighten up from a turn.

Yeah I was gonna change the rear diff oil yesterday but it was -25 C soo I decided against it, yeah ill be taking it to a shop for a closer inspection and ill post pics.

its only been a little bit over a year, that's why im confused hopefully its just a loose spring, I heard aussie lets you buy replacement parts for the locker?

less than 2 years old, yeah looked through that and what sucks is that im not the original owner, original owner is a friend, but he can't find the receipt either :hunter::hunter:

Never going to hurt to try. Worse they can say is no, and then you're in the same place you are now.
 
i have had pretty good luck with their customer service. i ordered the wrong locker on my last 4runner thinking it was a 2 pinion carrier and when i got it apart it was a 4 pinion. they traded it out for me but i ended up having to pay for the box that it came in because it was all covered in oil...

I just can't seem to justify spending so much on an air locker when I have seen more failures out of them than any brand of lunchbox locker.
but maybe that's just me.

i think their are lots of variable to that statement.
there are many brands of air and lunch box lockers. as well as who installs the locker. the installer has a huge portion, in my mind, on how things work.
im re-gearing and am sick of hearing the clicking around corners. i will enjoy the ability to select on and off. I also feel that the arb air lockers are stronger and worth the money.

I agree about the installer, and the selectable locker would be a nice option. the thing I'm not liking about air lockers is how many parts it takes to make it work. the more parts their are the more parts their are to fail.
I was out with a friend of mine that has arb's front and rear on his jeep. he noticed the lockers weren't working and I looked into it and found the bolts that hold the pump together were coming apart. then later that same trip the switch to his rear locker went out so I ended up wiring them together.
I have seen the air lines ripped off from shrubbery and carrier's fail. it's just too many things to go wrong in my opinion. I'm not saying lunchbox lockers don't fail either. just less often from what I have seen.

Yeah I didn't mind the clicking, actually kind of preferred it since I knew it was still working, took me a couple of days to actually realize that it stopped clicking and that's only because I had the radio down and had the window open to catch the last few summer breeze we have here in Canada :guitar2:
