Auto Salvage Yard Experience

Hey Dudes, [MENTION=102606]infamousRNR[/MENTION] visited a local Pick and Pull recently to rape a 3rd Gen of some parts. It's not really an instructional video but it has entertainment value and some informational value. So, if you were wondering what it's like to visit a local salvage yard for parts, here's Sean's and my experience at a California Bay Area Pick and Pull.

Damn dude, you bring the whole shop with you,that's the first time I've ever seen a puller set at a junkyard lol.
 
I'm jealous, up here in Calgary, Canada I hardly ever see stuff in the yard with that clean of an underbody. Also, at most I've ever seen is three 3rd gens on the yard at a time, and usually weeks apart in terms of yard date. That's important because they are usually picked clean after 1-2 weeks.

I cringed when you were trying to loosen the LCA bolt with the adjuster cam at first [emoji23]
It makes all the difference to have all the tools you need- like you had! Nice work [emoji1360]

I know. Trying to loosen the cam adjuster was a major brain fart. Sean saw my mistake and reminded me how we did it last time. Sometimes I'm as sharp as a knife and other times I'm as dull as a marble.

Yes, I'd much rather labor a bit carrying in more tools so I don't find I'm missing something that I need.

The pullers make a huge difference. On our previous trip, I was hammering on the knuckle of the balljoint to release the outer tie rod and I wasn't getting anywhere. I love that puller set. Makes things much easier.
 
I have seen it all in yards over the years: drugs, all forms of coitus, saw the birthing of a baby in the checkout line but the best was the dead body in the trunk of a Park Avenue. The swarm of 200+ flies should have been a telling tale.

Take the right tools but I often have ones with me that are well used. That shinny yellow Dewalt impact in some of the yards here in NC/VA would garner too much unwanted attention.

Find a working transmission for infamousRNR there? I can pay one yard $10 to call me when the right year and make of an auto I am looking for comes in.

You've definitely seen some interesting stuff. I've seen all the similar stuff as you, but not at a salvage yard, it was in the course of my duties as a firefighter.

Sean was considering going for a used transmission but I talked him out of it. In my opinion, that's a shitload of labor to perform for an unknown. Who knows how well the previous owner of the vehicle treated their rig. Who knows if the mileage they say was on the vehicle is an honest number. That used transmission could be awesome or it could be a total piece of shit. Even if it wasn't so labor intensive to replace, I still don't think I'd go used on a transmission, especially for a vehicle I plan on doing long distance trips in. Do the replacement once and have the confidence you won't be doing it ever again or for a long, long time.
 
Is that the 1/2" dewalt impact?

Edit: nevermind I took a closer look and it is. God I want one! I've got the 1/4" 18v impact and 3/8" 20v impact dewalts. The sketchy people are why I try to stay away from Pick and pulls or U pull R parts. I go to this salvage yard an hour from me that's more private plus they don't charge to go into the yard. Much nicer guys that work there and barely anyone goes there for parts since they are more of recyclers.

I have clutch packs in my 99 A340 that are going to be gone sooner than later. The first owner of my 4runner towed a boat, though not that far and heavy, many times over the years without taking it out of overdrive. I have a Toy/Lex specialty shop keeping a lookout for me for a used one for under $500. If no dice next year I'll be putting an order in for a new one.

I hope Sean can get his ride back on the road sooner than later.

Yeah, we'll get him back on the road pretty soon. He has to get the money together first but we'll at least save him a ton in labor costs and at the same time be able to make another valuable DIY video.
