Automatic Transmission differences

Does anyone have any actual experience using a 96-99 Federal emissions Automatic transmission in a 2000 Federal emissions 4Runner?

I have a 9/99 Federal emissions 4Runner, and it needs a transmission, which I have from a 6/99 Federal emissions 4Runner. According to "interchange" the 96-99 Transmission is different. And indeed the part numbers on the sticker on top of the Transmission are different between the two. However interchange also states that just the "wiring" is different, despite all the plugs matching up.

So I am looking for solid YES or NO answers, and facts. I know it "should work" and "might work" and "my buddys cousins sister changed one maybe", however I want concrete proof that someone has done this. OR if someone knows the difference, and whether it really matters.

96-98 transmissions have different valve bodies and number of solenoids than the 99-00, and the 01-02 have different valve bodies than the 96-98, and the 99-00.

So, you want a 99-00 transmission for a 99.

Also, I pulled a trans from a 6/99 4Runner and it has the same part number/blue sticker on the top of the transmission as the 96, 97, and 98's I have. The split is somewhere in late 1999. The 9/99 Truck has a green tag with one part number, and the 6/99 has a blue tag with another part number.

Sorry, blue/purple I am colorblind :/

If you swapped purple tag for purple tag....that doesn't help me. I am trying to put a Purple tag trans where a Green tag trans was.

I dug through the parts catalog looking for differences and here is what I came up with-

Valve body
front pump body
solenoids

That being said, the torque converter and input shafts are the same. All of the main sensors are the same and even the small wiring harness that plugs into the solenoids is the same. The main differences all revolve around the valve body.

My concern would be the possibility of odd shift patterns because of the different sensors, valve body and a different ECU between years.

Only one way to find out and someone has to be first!

In case anyone was looking for closure....I swapped in an early 99 Transmission, and she shifted smooth as butter. So I have no idea what they changed in 2000, but the early Purple tag transmission will work!

What about a 1/99-5/99 trans into a 2000?

99-00 have near identical parts across the board, you will be fine.

I put a 99 tranny in my 97, works perfectly and required no modifications. Any 96-00 will interchange just fine. The valve body is different but all the electrical plugs are the same.

01/02 tranny's do not have a kick down cable and won't work in a 96-00 or vice versa.

Funny thing - I put a '97 trans in my '99. :thumb:

One tip if you are going to swap tranny's. Do not disconnect the hard lines on the tranny. They are a ***** to get back in. My buddy swapped tranny's on his Taco and just undid the soft lines up at the radiator and fed the hoses back.

It was a freaking nightmare to get the frozen/rusted nut to start on the threads, especially because the hard lines have essentially zero play in them without bending them.

Oh, and rent a tranny jack....

That is exactly what I swapped. So, yes works great
