hey, guys
need some feedback regarding some tires...been looking through this thread for a few and then comparing to the discount direct page and i have a handful of questions i hope you can help me with
current tires are hankook dynapro P265/70R16 111T
i see a few folks have gone with the cooper discoverer AT3s; so, i'm going to use these as my example that hopefully works across manufacturers
looking on the discount direct web site i see 2 different AT3s...the plain ones and the LT ones...looking at info on the interwebs, i see that LT are meant for towing, basically
from the tirerack.com site: LT = If a tire size begins with "LT" it signifies the tire is a "Light Truck-metric" size that was designed to be used on vehicles that are capable of carrying heavy cargo or towing large trailers
seems to mean the same thing regardless if the description starts with LT or ends with LT
what kind of weight are we talking about here?
is there that much of a difference between the 2 types of tires regarding towing capabilities?
other than the "towing issue", is/are there any reasons to always get or never get the LTs?
are all tire manufacturers the same in that there is a plain model and a LT model for each tire model?
i'm guessing, if i don't ever plan on towing i should go with the plain model of whichever tire i get...but i'm thinking of a pop-up trailer in my future; so, i do plan on towing something...however, i don't think a pop-up trailer would necessarily constitute "heavy cargo" and/or "large trailer"
the more i look at this info the more questions that are coming up...gonna stop here and see what kind of answers come up that, hopefully, will answer some of the other questions i am coming up with
"last question"...regarding 70s vs 75s...any reason go with one or the other?
doing my calculations, the difference is about 1/2" in the profile height of the two tires...70s are 7.3" and 75s are 7.8" (265 / 25.4 * .7 or .75)

Hey, off topic but related question. How was your experience with the Wrangler RT/S? I am getting a good deal on those ($475 shipped) but could not find any reviews here.. Are they strictly for highway and suck off-road?

Just an FYI, the local Discount Tire shouldn't have charged you for mount and balance. It should have come with the purchase of the tires ( I asked them with my first purchase). I've ordered three times from DTD and each time I've taken to a different local DT...and I've never been charged. You may want to mention something to them next time you are in for a rotation.

I never tried them offroad, but they did decent on the highway and in the snow. Switching to the heavier Duratracs actually smoothed out the ride, but they're noisier than the RT/S were.

I've used DT for years and you get just the first mount/balance included. The life time is about $16 a tire and always has been in all the states I have used them.

Hmm, maybe its different in Indiana. My dad started using Discount about 15 yrs ago maybe, and I have since I got my first car 14 years ago. I've never had to pay extra for mount and balance when I bought the tires. I always get the replacement certs, but that doesn't cover M&B.

Most likely. I've used them in New Mexico and Texas and always had to pay extra for the life time balance.

I have a couple of thousand miles on the Cooper Discoverys I ordered from Discount. We don't have their stores so I had a third party mount and balance them on some 5 Star rims for $80. I had them put the weights on the rear side so they don't show. I just had one of those banner ads that indicate that Cooper has the Discovery on special again; an $80 gift card with purchase of four.
I got one inch larger tires and my MPG's seem to have dropped about 1 to 2 MPG's. On my trip last weekend I got 22 MPG where I used to get 24 with old balding Michelins.

i just bought 2 new sets of tires in NM and the lifetime balancing was included. This is straight from their webpage.

That's the out the door price at an actual store and is included in the quote. Discount tire direct is only for the tires I believe. I didn't getime mounted at a discount because there aren't any close but I brought it to them recently because my tires wouldn't balance and they said they were going to charge me for a lifetime balance/rotation but ended up not.

Yep. They include the costs automatically in the online pricing but you are still paying for them. When you get your receipt you will see the itemized breakdown of the price. You don't have to accept the life time balancing though so it is an added cost.
I like DT because I can haggle them down on the base tire costs a bit even if they have the lowest price to begin with. That and they are pretty good about balancing the tires and pretty quick on the turn around.
The only free service they offer is rotations because it offers them the opportunity to generate sales if they find anything wrong.

Heh, guess I got lucky. When ordering from Direct the guy told me just to take the receipt and the tires and they'll get them on. And since then I've never gotten any flack when I take them in for balance and rotation.
