Back End Sliding/Fishtailing In Rain

Somewhat related, I'm just surprised how above average my new KO2's are on the waterlogged streets this time of year.

New, they are great in the rain. Once they get about half worn they will start slipping and sliding too. Every set of KO2s I've ran started losing the wet traction at about 25-30k miles. They're great tires but the wet traction does go away.

Whatever you do don’t buy KO2 to solve this problem. I like many others had to get rid of KO2 just because of the dangerous liability of poor wet traction.

Fourth vote, had the same issue with Nittos and less than 3k miles on them.

That's about right. My Firestone Destination MTs were oddly great in the rain, which makes no sense looking at them, but they started to separate BADLY long before they wore out.

At least they're not Duratracs. I managed 3rd gear one tire fire with those on my Tacoma before the supercharger.

As tires age they get harder. The volatiles in the rubber which makes them soft evaporates. Each manufacturer/tire model has a different rubber compounds based on expected performance of the tire. If your rubber is more than 4/5 years old, I would consider replacement if you are worried about traction. If not lay off the gas. Tread design also matters for wet traction. I replace my motorcycle tires every 3 years regardless of tread thickness or sooner based on tread thickness. You must have sticky tires on a motorcycle. Sticky tires don't last long. Hard tire last longer, and don't grip as well. As its been said you can not have everything in a tire. You need to pick what performance is important for you. I have KO2's on my 4runner and have not had a problem. It rains a lot in Louisiana

how long have you had your truck? you haven't noticed this until 4 yrs later assuming you got the truck new?

i also live in the bay area, but i have 4 mo old ridge grapplers. i had no issues driving in the rain this past saturday.

i'm guessing with these bigger storms, you'll need more then double head of a quarter.

I bought it a year ago. The Nitto Grapplers came with it. Tire treads are 11/32 or 11mm deep. I thought that is sufficient. Guess not.

It's your tires. Terra Grapplers are notoriously bad in wet conditions. Seems like it's about time for new ones anyway I'd look at something better rated for wet traction.

Going slower in the corners is a good idea too. At least until you get some new rubber.

You confirmed what I was thinking in that the problem was with the tires. I’ve never bought these tires before so I’m not familiar with them. I bought my 4Runner used a year ago and the Terra Grappler came with it. So I don’t know how old they are or how many miles they have. It still had decent tread on them so I thought the tires were still good. Guess not.

Looks like it’s time to buy new tires. I’ve had KO2 on my Trooper for many years and never had any problem and always been happy with them but I’ll definitely check out the Wildpeaks AT3 since so many people recommend them. Until then I’ll have to treat the corners like mud.

I think my next tires will be the wild peaks AT3. They look bigger for there size.
