I've had a few different 4Runners over the last decade. I bought a new 2007 Sport 4X4 but regrettably sold it after only 4 years to get something bigger. Then 4 years ago I purchased my good friends 2008 V8 Sport and loved that car more than any other. Lift, tires, bulbs, the whole lot - I knew that car up & down. Sadly lost it to the Hurricane in Houston 1.5 years ago and was left with my little VW GTI ever since.
But no more! I found a great deal on a 2018 Off-Road Premium with 18.5K miles in the exact color I wanted. Pretty sure the dealer had it priced incorrectly because it wasn't listed as a Premium. Paid full asking price ($34.5K) and got the 100K Toyota warranty for $1600 (his first quote was for 60K @ $2700 lol). I figure a new 4Runner would cost me around $38K before taxes with a 36K mile warranty so I feel pretty good about the purchase. I plan on giving this one to my daughter - and shes only 8.
Initial thoughts: It feels eerily similar to my 4th Gen. That surprised me. It has the same rugged and well-built feel of my previous model and yet I was expecting something a little more refined. I've had it 2 days and it already feels like a vehicle I've owned for many years. The V8 low end torque is lacking but overall the engine feels very similar to my 2008. The lack of tech continues to be startling for a car sold today with a sticker over $40K. But my kids love it, my wife is happy I'm in something bigger, and now I get to start the oh so fun process of modding it out. Ill be selling a set of 4th Gen Sport rims (no tires) and the full set of ORP Premium wheels (w/tires 18K miles) within a week if anyone is interested. Can't imagine they'd bring in more than a few hundred dollars.
General thoughts & questions I have early on:
-The transfer of the TPMS to new wheels seems to be relatively simple yet a Goodyear tire shop near me didn't want to mess with the whole transfer & wheel exchange due to insurance reasons. What?
-Haven't found a good all weather mat yet. See lots of you like Huskey. I was hoping for something direct from Toyota but their all weather mats don't look tough enough. Other recommendations here?
-I could have sworn the Black emblems were direct replacements but it seems that most are overlays? Not sure how I feel about that. Need to do more research on it.
-Blank switches and buttons - I HATE them. What could they possibly we for in a model like this? My guess is some Limited features that the OR does not get.
-How Toyota saw fit to release this vehicle with the Audio/Nav system in this thing amazes me. My Acura TL from 2004 is comparable. Really embarrassing. Shows real Toyota devotion that we're all willing to overlook this fault and continue to purchase them in the numbers we do.
-My favorite TRD Pro colors in order: Cement, Quicksand, Inferno, Voodoo
-I really dislike the look of the ORP wheels.
