Backpacking and Gear Talk

I pack heavy and old school. Large Alice pack. Tactailor mods. shoulder straps and kidney belt, fastex buckles, molle strapping, and storm flap. Folding saw, fixed blade knife(s) Mora & Ontario. (2) 1 quart canteen. Empty nalgen and MSR water filter. 2-3 MRE's big bag of trail mix or similar. First aid kit. ECWS GI sleeping bag. Old school thermarest, hammock. Synthetic long underwear, pants, several layers of fleece. Wool hat, socks and gloves. Extra pair of wool socks unless it's hot out. Works for spare gloves or socks. In the winter I add wool pants, sweeter.

Then depending on where I'm hiking. Usually a rifle and ammo extra pistol ammo.

Plus what ever. Usually weighs in around 40-55 pounds depending on the time of year. Good foot ware is absolutely the most important thing to have imho.

This past weekend was our first backpacking trip in about 18 months, and our first backpacking trip in 12 years without our pup with us. Felt good to get out for a night, and cover around 20 miles. This is from Mount Jefferson Wilderness, and we were able link up a couple different trail to circumnavigate Three Fingered Jack.

We're heading to Washington Tuesday evening for our next backpacking trip. This trip with be in Goat Rocks Wilderness, and will follow the PCT for a little. Just another short hike (23 miles), and 1 night on the trail. Then a couple days in Seattle to relax. I'll try to get some gear pictures this time around.

I'm going to do a little photo dumping here since this thread is lacking.

I recently turned 40, and needed to challenge myself. It just so happened that my mother in law was in town, and was able to watch our pup while we had a short adventure. We left the house at 2 am, and arrived at the trail head 4 am. By 4:30 we were on the trail, and the first ones on the trail. In all this trail was 6.1 miles one way, and had an elevation gain of 4,898'. Trail conditions were perfect heading up, and even had a couple inches of fresh snow. Things got a little sketchy on the way down once the sun came out.

We were on the summit of South Sister by 9:30, and the first ones to the summit. Not a bad way to spend your 40th.

Comms:
Cellphone with battery pack
Basic ISR
Sat Phone (when it can be borrowed from a friend)

Have you considered the Garmin inReach mini unit? I got one not too long ago and its turned into my favorite piece of saftey / communications equipment.

I am also a licenced ham radio person, but this device just takes saftey coms to a another level, plus it's affordable all things considered.

$15 / month for what is basically a satellite 2-way pager / communicator. I'm impressed how well it works. I did get the mini, and you can text message though your cell phone using the inReach as a sat modem over Bluetooth. For an extra $18 for the year, you can get 100k in search and rescue coverage in case you ever had a serious emergency.

Here's a hike from about a year ago. This was a short hike linking the PCT to the Obsidian Trail, and Scott Lake Trail.
