Bad grinding / clunking sound in 4 low

Hi there I'm looking at buying a 99 sr5. Tested it out and 4hi seemed to be working fine but right after I engaged 4low and went too creep forward there was some serious grinding and clunking sounds that almost sounded like they were coming from the front diff or transfer case? this sound got worse as I crept forward. After going about 30 feet I put it back into 4hi and it seemed too work fine i was wondering if the 4hi can work fine if the 4low is damaged or is it most likely that they are both damaged?. The seller was suprised and concerned when he heard the sounds after 4low engaged and claimed to only use 4hi and never had any problem.

Anyone have any idea? I'm going too look at it again tonight ..... I rolled my baby and need to replace her before the snow. Seems like an ok runner and a decent deal asides from the 4low issue
