Bad vibration at 1500 rpm in high gear

I recently purchased an 05 Ltd 4Runner V8 and it developed a mild vibration when passing through the 1700-1800 rpm range. Now it has a new vibration at 1500 rpm after you've hit high gear and I end up having to drive constantly with it like that around town. The dealer says they all do it. I find that SO hard to believe. I don't see any discussion of this here (since last October, actually...the posts about this vibration just disappeared). What happened? Did they sell the vehicles? Have them bought back? Learn to live with it? Drive them off cliffs? I did post several weeks ago about it and got one response from another person that has this. Is this truly something I'm supposed to live with? Any info would be greatly appreciated. If no one else in this forum is buying 4runners with this vibration, I will pursue having Toyota make a repair attempt on it. If you own a 4runner and it doesn't do this, let me know please. I'm might even start flagging down people I see driving these vehicles too to see if they have this problem :-)

The problem with posting about perceived vibrations is that everyone is different. I can tell you that I don't have a vibration problem with my 4runner and based on posts most of the other members don't have a problem. Now if you go to the Lexus site a lot of them complain about a driveline vibration, (same driveline that is in the 4runner and it is built in the same factory) so what is the difference? I think it is expectations. Toyota 4runner owners bought a heavyduty midsized body on frame SUV. Lexus owners bought a Luxury SUV. I would suggest you go to your dealership and talk with the service manager, about them saying your vibration is "normal" if it is they should be able to let you drive say two other 2005 4runners that feel just the same. After driving these two vehicles and they are not the same have the service manager drive all three vehicles and explain why yours has a vibration that these others don't have. If yours is different then I would expect that the service manager will do whatever is needed to fix your ride. Good luck.

i've had a number of posts and threads on this topic. do a search under my user name, hre814. i've learned to live with it and it doesn't bother me anymore.

On my 2005 V8 4WD Limited - I have the vibration. I suspect that this vibration will be more pronounced with age.

On my 1995 V6 Acura Legend, it did not come with a balancer and as the vehicle aged (to 130k miles) that slight vibration became WAY more noticeable.

I'm hoping this will not be the case with the 4runner.

My 2004 V8 4WD does it. It's in the transmission. No vibration at this RPM with the transmission in neutral so it's not the engine. Like others posting here I've gotten used to it and it's no big deal. I guess I feel fortunate that's the only thing I don't care for in an otherwise perfect vehicle. I'm curious if 2005 V6 4runners have it now that the same 5-speed transmission is in the V6 models this year. Any V6 owners care to comment?

My 04 V6 does this. I really only feel the vibration through the gas pedal, and it seems the worst at about 77mph. It doesnt matter whether I am going uphill or downhill or how much load the engine/tranny is under. It feels like an out of balance driveshaft to me, but apparently it is a common problem.

I have a similar problem that I suspect is not something to ignore. I get a bad vibration around 1800-2000 rpm, and it's a recent development (@ 102K mi.). It was a very noticable change from a smooth drive to quite a pronounced vibration, jsut started happening when I went home from work one day.

My guess is that the transmission has a problem. Anyone else?

If you have a pronounced vibration that just started @102K miles you should be heading to the shop to check out what is causing this.:bash:

That said, the vibration that I used to feel; that buzzy feel in the steering wheel and driveline has gone away. I happened to "get on it" one day and since then it is gone. I somehow got into a mini race with a Honda and managed to get it up past 85 from a standing stop with my foot to the floor all the way. Wheeeeee!!!
OOPS!

By the way the T4r V8 can move out.

Proper driveshaft lubrication or balancing?

Please note that I do not have the mechanical expertise of many of the contributors to this board, so take my comments accordingly. Furthermore, I drive a 2000 SR5 V6 with a 5 spd manual, so my experience might not even apply to your 4th gen rig, but it could be worth considering. I purchased my Runner from the original owner who kept all service records. The records showed oil changes, including lubrication of the drivetrain, every 3000-3500 miles, which is one reason I decided to buy the rig regardless of the high mileage--108k. Also, all Toyota prescribed maintenance and most of the oil changes/lubrication were done at a Toyota dealership. Sounds good so far, right? Well, my T4R had an interesting chirp/ whine when I let up on the gas, so I took it to an independent garage where a trusted mechanic found that all the drivetrain lubrication points were bone dry. He lubed'em up and the noise soon disappeared. He told me that lubing is normally not needed every oil change, so mechanics get in a hurry and don't always check all the points, figuring it'll get done next time anyhow, and that'll be soon enough even if they're almost dry. So, is it possible the vibration could be related to neglected lubrication of the drive-shaft and U-joints? All of the T4R's above are 04 and 05's. They must have had several oil changes including PRESUMED lubrications by now.

2. Also consider this: Did you know that the driveshaft or your brand new unit wasn't produced perfectly balanced? It must be spun and balanced at the factory just like your wheels/tires? I didn't know this until I had to nurse an off-roading '95 Tacoma with 156k on it. You can see the balancing weights if you inspect your driveshaft. One set of weights on my 2000 T4R are just in front of the U-joint near the center of the rig. Could your driveshaft be out of balance? I wonder about this because you report the vibration is more pronounced at certain rpm's, and we all know that vibration at certain rpm's is a characteristic of a wheel/tire that is out of balance. Maybe the factory driveshaft-balancer was out of specs for a certain production period. This is a remote possibility that the service manager will not want to entertain, I'm sure.

3. Or, if it turns out to be true that "they all do it," and you prove to yourself that nothing is defective, maybe you just need to accept and celebrate the fact that your rig has an off-roading heritage, and its okay if it feels a little bit more like a truck than you expected. Good luck. Keep us informed.
