Balancing nightmare (Video)

Hi everyone,

After buying my 4runner I replaced my tires after 140 miles to General Grabber A/TX, (Original size) from America's tire and here is how it went.

1. Balanced after purchase due to steering wheel shaking at 55-65.
2. Different America's tire, balanced still shaking.
3. Went to toyota and paid for road force balance and alignment. Still shaking at 55-65, went back and was told the tires themselves might be a problem.
4. Back to America's tires, road force balance and still shaking at 55-65. I was told there is nothing wrong with the tires.

This process is taking so long that I've put over 4k miles on the tires now and have had this issue since I replaced them.

Here is a video of what I'm dealing with and am not sure what to do from here, any advice would be much appreciated!:cheers:

i went through this too. two different sets of tires. it turns out you need someone who knows what they are doing to operate a road force balancer with the smart balance feature off.

find an independent shop or an offroad shop to do it. dealers are worthless.

what they use to balance? beads or weights.

If they used beads, might want to have them use old fashion weights.

I had ko2's that took multiple trips to get it balanced and to multiple shops. Last shop I took it too, I had them remount it just on a whim and it worked.

Original shop used beads and it didnt work, at least not for my specific set of tires.

A comment to this first... It's very frustrating and sometimes scary not to know the root of a mechanical problem. Why not just offer your assistive comments and move on? to each is own and not trying to start a forum battle!

To the OP. I would go back to the tire mounting store and have them keep dialing it in until it works. I have had a similar problem and went back to the shop until they got it right. This means they have to spend more time on it, which is loss of productivity on new installs, but you gotta push them till they get it right.

Once they dial it in, have them put in the notes what they did so you dont have to go through the same thing again.

I bought General Grabber A/TX for my subaru outback, had exact same issue after days of balancing at different places Discount Tire replaced (frre of charge) with Michelins and BAM no more shake. I'll never buy those tires again.

I had a similar issue with America’s Tire when I replaced the front tires on my 2015 4Runner (due to a puncture). Their price was great but couldn’t get it balanced after two attempts. I went to a tire specialty shop (Stokes Tire in Santa Monica) that was recommended to me and they fixed it straight away.

I’ve had good luck at America’s Tire on other cars so I’ll go back there but maybe 4Runner tires are hard to balance?

In general, most offroad tires are "harder" to balance. It's hit or miss.

Most of the times going the cheaper route usually cost more.

I would swap the tires with good tires like michellin or yokohama and see if the problem goes away

For those saying to replace the tires, it's likely not the tires, guys. It's well-known that 4runners tend to be very sensitive to balance and can/will shake.

Lots of folks here replaced tires to no avail. Lots of folks found various solutions. Lots more still deal with the shakes, which can come and go depending on outside factors like temp.

First things to try, which worked for me:

- find a shop that has a lug adapter - not a cone adapter for balancing. Not ever tire shop does. This helps balance lug-centric wheels, which Toyota uses.
- Discount Tire is a good option and many do have the above adaper
- If the balance doesn't work even with the adapter, ask the tech to turn off "smart balance" on the machine (Hawk machine, if I recall correctly). Mine shook bad with that software function turned on, but stopped with it turned off. DT now has a note on my account for the techs to always turn that function off. They've told me they used it on other Toyotas with balancing problems with good success.

It's not guaranteed to resolve your issue, but you should be close. Mine still shake just a little bit (and not all the time), but nowhere near what they did after original mount and balance.

seriously, balancing offroad tires involves some kind of voodoo magic sometimes.

had the same problem with my falken wildpeak at3w, had the shake just like that. replaced them today with cooper rugged trek smooth as glass.

Guys I feel your frustration having done it myself.

Suggestion #1: Make sure they give you the lbs# value of how out of balance and or round they are - for each tire.
There's a ton of threads on here about how this works. But roughly it simulates pressure on the tire to simulate how its going to roll on the road. When the wheel is out of balance its going to exert extra pressure at a certain point in the rotation which can be measured in LBS.
Suggestion #1: same as #1 -Again make sure they give you that LBS value for each wheel before accepting the wheels as balanced.

Many places will say under 25lbs is acceptable. But some will still feel vibes at 25lbs. Under 20lbs is better, under 15lbs is fantastic, under 10lbs is Cadillac luxury smooth.

As I posted in the other thread "another vibration issue", my last set KO's sucked big time, I spent about 20 hours at DT over 5 different trips, even brought my own beach chair to sit outside. Appointment #3 they popped the bead and spun the tires on the rims. Eventually they replaced a tire at appointment #4 and another at appointment #5. Like many here after being there for 2 hours I don't have time to stick around and had to schedule another appointment. Then when you think its fixed you go in for a rotation and the worst tires they stuck on the back since you wont feel it there end up on the front and boom your problem is back.
